Abstract

CaWO4 and Al2O3 are well-established target materials which are used by experiments searching for rare events like the elastic scattering off of a hypothetical Dark Matter particle. In recent years, experiments have established detection thresholds for nuclear recoils at the 10eV-scale. At this energy scale, a reliable Monte Carlo simulation of the expected background is crucial. However, none of the publicly available general-purpose simulation packages are validated at this energy scale and for these targets. The recently started ELOISE project aims to provide reliable simulations of electromagnetic particle interactions for this use case by obtaining experimental reference data, validating the simulation code against them, and, if needed, calibrating the code to the reference data.

Report

In this proceeding author presents a project Eloise which aims to validate Monte Carlo simulation at sub-energies. The manuscript is clearly written and well organised. I recommend the manuscript for publication with some recommendations:
- “CaWO4 and Al2O3 are widely used target materials for cryogenic calorimeters.” - please provide references.
- “The NUCLEUS experiment [1] aims to measure CEνNS with CaWO4 calorimeters as a new probe for electro-weak precision measurements. ” and Al2O3 too judging on their last presentations
- “Table 1 lists the maximal recoil energies for two typical benchmark cases.” Make clear it is simulations or analysis
- “As the target crystals are operated at mK-temperatures, an annealing of the caused damage is strongly suppressed.” - not clear what author is trying to say here.
- “neutronic background” ?
- Fig.1 make clear is it data or simulation
- “we will apply the methodology developed by T. Basaglia et al.” please give reasoning
- “105 nm thick CaWO4 sample” please explain why this thickness and do you plan to check other thicknesses?
