Abstract

This contribution presents recent cross section measurements for top quark pair production (tt) and single top quark production in association with a W boson (tW) in proton-proton collisions at the CMS experiment at LHC. For tt production, data from 2017 at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of 5.02 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 302 pb^-1 were analyzed, with a measured inclusive cross section of 62.3 +- 1.5 (stat) +- 2.4 (syst) +- 1.2 (lumi) pb, consistent with standard model (SM) predictions. The tW measurement was performed using data from 2022 with an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb^-1 at a CM energy of 13.6 TeV, yielding a cross section of 82.3 +- 2.1 (stat) +9.9,-9.7 (syst) +- 3.3 (lumi) pb, in agreement with SM predictions. It includes also differential cross sections which are in good agreement with next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Report

I recommend the paper for publication. However I think in several places the English should be improved (see comments below).

  • title: 'quark' is missing : top-quark cross sections
  • abstract: at the CMS experiment -> with the CMS experiment
  • abstract: standard model -> Standard Model
  • in several places the unit is cut at the beginning in a next line (pb in the abstract, GeV in several other places in the text, like Section 3.1 twice and Section 4)
  • Section 1: could vary its cross section -> could modify its cross section
  • Section 1: Also, tW ... : this sentence doesn't have a verb
  • Section 1: single-top quark LHC result
  • Section 2: title "Analysis" : I guess it would be more informative to state that this is about cross section measurement (same for title of Section 3)
  • Section 2.1: are incorporated via MC -> are modeled using MC
  • Section 2.2: it is stated that the result is combined with the dilepton channel but the result of the combination is not quoted
  • Section 3.1: add an explanation or a reference for the DR scheme (same in Section 3.2 for the DS scheme)

Dear Referee 1,

Thank you for your revision, I have updated the document including your editorial suggestions. Just two minor comments:

  • Concerning the combination with the dilepton channel, the result of the combination is the one written in the text. What is not given explicitly is the previous measurement, which is just cited (giving another extra result may be misleading, moreover given the fact that it is overseeded by the one given in the analysis described)
  • As for the DR, DS issue, I have decided to better give a reference, rather than explaining it. The reference is https://arxiv.org/abs/0805.3067

I would like to know which are the next steps regarding the resubmission of the updated version.

Best, The Author

Thanks for the update.
About the combination, then I would advise to clarify the text so that we know exactly what is quoted.
