Abstract

Nuclei with proton and neutron numbers away from stability are known as exotic, and provide stringent tests of nuclear models, mainly developed for the description of stable nuclei. However, only the most extreme combinations lead to literally exotic structures, with sometimes unexpected properties. In this contribution we review some selected examples around the neutron dripline of very light elements: neutron halo structures with embedded substructures in the boron chain; the emission of neutron pairs in $^{16}$Be; and the existence of multi-neutron resonances in `superheavy' hydrogen isotopes.

Strengths

1.This is an interesting paper and should undoubtedly be published.
2.The experimental results described and discussed are certainly at the forefront of our efforts to understand he properties of exotic nuclei.

Weaknesses

I have a few suggestions for altering words and phrases in the text.
1.page 1, line4 of the Introduction: "--question of what the properties of a system -----neutrons would be, is still open for most values of Z and N.
2.page 1, 12 lines from bottom: "---the absence of a Coulomb barrier for the neutrons. As such, the most neutron-rich combinations soon become unreachable------
3.Page1, 5th last line: "--extreme limits do the nuclear----"
4.page 1, 3rd last line: "--displayed in Fig.!, where we see how----"
5. section 2, line 5: " These changes dictate---
6. Page 3,line 1: "The potential to exhibit
7. Page 3,section 3, line 6: " ---could also have described ---"
8.page 3, 4th last line: "--describe either of the two decays."
9. page4,line1:"---leads to good overall agreement---"
10. Page 4, secton 4, line4: "---attracted special attention in recent decades."
11.Page 5 ,line 5: centre of mass.
12.Page5, last line of section 5.:In the short-term future---

Note:The magenta and pink colours in Figure 1 are hard to tell apart.
