• Development of the detectors for the DeeMe experiment

  In the DeeMe experiment, approximately $70\ \mathrm{GHz/mm^{2}}$ prompt-charged particles will hit the multi-wire proportional chambers (MWPCs) before signal electrons come. To avoid the space charge effect, we developed fast HV-switching MWPCs in order to control the gas gain dynamically. All four of the MWPCs were manufactured. Last year, the circuit of readout amplifiers is slightly modified to further improve the efficiency of the detector, and we also started to investigate other possible choices of the gas mixture. In this article, the development of the detectors and results of performance tests will be presented.

• Four-body Faddeev-type calculation of the $\bar{K}NNN$ system: Preliminary results

  The paper is devoted to the $\bar{K}NNN$ system, consisting of an antikaon and three nucleons. Four-body Faddeev-type AGS equations are being solved in order to find possible quasi-bound state in the system.

• $G_2$-manifolds from 4d N=1 theories, part I: Domain walls

  We propose new $G_2$-holonomy manifolds, which geometrize the Gaiotto-Kim 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ duality domain walls of 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories. These domain walls interpolate between different extended Coulomb branch phases of a given 5d superconformal field theory. Our starting point is the geometric realization of such a 5d superconformal field theory and its extended Coulomb branch in terms of M-theory on a non-compact singular Calabi-Yau three-fold and its Kähler cone. We construct the 7-manifold that realizes the domain wall in M-theory by fibering the Calabi-Yau three-fold over a real line, whilst varying its Kähler parameters as prescribed by the domain wall construction. In particular this requires the Calabi-Yau fiber to pass through a canonical singularity at the locus of the domain wall. Due to the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry that is preserved on the domain wall, we expect the resulting 7-manifold to have holonomy $G_2$. Indeed, for simple domain wall theories, this construction results in 7-manifolds, which are known to admit torsion-free $G_2$-holonomy metrics. We develop several generalizations to new 7-manifolds, which realize domain walls in 5d SQCD theories and walls between 5d theories which are UV-dual.

• Description of continuum structures in a discrete basis: Three-body resonances and two-nucleon decays

  Weakly bound and unbound three-body nuclei are studied by using the pseudostate method within the hyperspherical formalism. After introducing the theoretical framework, the method is applied first to the $\boldsymbol{^9}$Be nucleus, showing a good agreement with the available data for its low-lying dipole response. Then, recent results on the structure and decay of the two-neutron emitters $\boldsymbol{^{26}}$O and $\boldsymbol{^{16}}$Be are presented. In particular, the role of the $\boldsymbol{n}$-$\boldsymbol{n}$ correlation in shaping their properties is discussed.

• Alibis of Exclusion: The role of ethnic economies in the differentiated inclusion of refugees in Berlin

  Neoliberal transformations in the field of asylum in Germany have, since 2016, placed an emphasis on labour market participation as the primary way through which refugees can establish long-term residence claims. Yet, while new arrivals are increasingly expected to rapidly integrate into this market, they are often armed with differential and precarious legal statuses which overwhelmingly determine the spheres of economic activity refugees can enter. This is especially true for the ever increasing number of rejected asylum seekers who are temporarily “tolerated”, for whom the only path to residence requires that they display their value as economic subjects to the German state. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Berlin between 2017 and 2020, I argue that, armed with little other than their cultural identities and networks, many refugees heavily relied on co-ethnic relationships to facilitate their participation in the labour market. The result is a displacement of the management of new diversity to ethnic economies, a move that disavows the marginalising consequences of the neoliberal transformations refugees are subject to. By masking a relationship between recently arrived migrants and the German economy and society as a relationship between migrants themselves, I argue that these practices work as alibis of exclusion.

• Frequency-independent optical spin injection in Weyl semimetals

  We demonstrate that in Weyl semimetals, the momentum-space helical spin texture can couple to the chirality of the Weyl node to generate a frequency-independent optical spin injection. This frequency-independence is rooted in the topology of the Weyl node. Since the helicity and the chirality are always locked for Weyl nodes, the injected spin from a pair of Weyl nodes always add up, implying no symmetry requirements for Weyl semimetals. Finally, we show that such frequency-independent spin injection is robust against multiband corrections and lattice-regularization effect and capable of realizing all-optical magnetization switching in the THz regime.

• First-order transition in a model of prestige bias

  One of the major benefits of belonging to a prestigious group is that it affects the way you are viewed by others. Here I use a simple mathematical model to explore the implications of this "prestige bias" when candidates undergo repeated rounds of evaluation. In the model, candidates who are evaluated most highly are admitted to a "prestige class", and their membership biases future rounds of evaluation in their favor. I use the language of Bayesian inference to describe this bias, and show that it can lead to a runaway effect in which the weight given to the prior expectation associated with a candidate's class becomes stronger with each round. Most dramatically, the strength of the prestige bias after many rounds undergoes a first-order transition as a function of the precision of the examination on which the evaluation is based.

• Virial expansion coefficients in the unitary Fermi gas

  Virial expansion is widely used in cold atoms to analyze high temperature strongly correlated many-body systems. As the n-th order virial expansion coefficient can be accurately obtained by exactly solving up to n-body problems, the virial expansion offers a few-body approach to study strongly correlated many-body problems. In particular, the virial expansion has successfully been applied to unitary Fermi gas. We review recent progress of the virial expansion studies in the unitary Fermi gas, in particular the fourth order virial coefficient.

• Study of deuteron-proton backward elastic scattering at intermediate energies

  We study deuteron- proton elastic scattering in the deuteron energy range between 500 MeV and 2~GeV at the cms scattering angle $\theta^*\ge 140^\circ$. The reaction is considered in the relativistic multiple scattering expansion framework. The four reaction mechanisms are included into consideration: one-nucleon exchange, single scattering, double scattering, and the term corresponding to the delta excitation in the intermediate state. The model is applied to describe the angular dependence of the differential cross section at the deuteron energies of between 880 and 1300 MeV. Also the energy dependence of the differential cross section and polarisation observables such as tensor analyzing power $T_{20}$ and polarization transfer from the deuteron to proton $\varkappa$ are considered at the scattering angle equal to 180$^\circ$. Contributions of the different reaction mechanisms into the reaction amplitude are demonstrated in comparison with the existing experimental data.

• Three-nucleon force effects in nucleon-deuteron scattering at backward angles

  Elastic and breakup cross sections in nucleon-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies are calculated using a realistic two-nucleon potential and three-nucleon potentials based on the exchange of two pions among three nucleons. Attractive effects of the pion-exchange at medium range region in the three-nucleon potential are recovered by using a shorter range cutoff. It is shown that these effects increase the cross sections at backward angles, which tends to reduce discrepancies between theoretical calculations and experimental data.
