• SU(3) hybrid static potentials at small quark-antiquark separations from fine lattices

  We summarize our recent lattice gauge theory computation of the $\Pi_u$ and $\Sigma_u^-$ hybrid static potentials at small quark-antiquark separations. We provide parameterizations of the resulting lattice data points, which can be used for investigating masses and properties of heavy hybrid mesons in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

• Differential measurements of jet sub-structure observables and their correlation in p+p collisions at √s = 200 GeV in STAR

  This analysis extends recent measurements of the jet sub-structure observables based on the SoftDrop algorithm in p+p collisions at √s = 200 GeV in the STAR experiment. We present fully unfolded multi-differential measurements of jet sub-structure observables at the first split and their correlations for jets of different transverse momenta and radii. We compare our measurements to various Monte Carlo models.

• The prediction of anyons: Its history and wider implications

  Prediction of "anyons," often attributed exclusively to Wilczek, came first from Leinaas and Myrheim in 1977, and independently from Goldin, Menikoff, and Sharp in 1980-81. In 2020, experimentalists successfully created anyonic excitations. This paper discusses why the possibility of quantum particles in two-dimensional space with intermediate exchange statistics eluded physicists for so long after bosons and fermions were understood. The history suggests ideas for the preparation of future researchers. I conclude by addressing failures to attribute scientific achievements accurately, both inadvertent and intentional. Such practices disproportionately hurt women and minorities in physics.

• Magnetic properties of a multicomponent intermetallic compound Tb$_{0.25}$Dy$_{0.25}$Ho$_{0.25}$Er$_{0.25}$Al$_2$

  Polycrystalline multicomponent Laves phase rare earth intermetallic compound Tb$_{0.25}$ Dy$_{0.25}$Ho$_{0.25}$Er$_{0.25}$Al$_{2}$ has been synthesized by arc-melting and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The sample has MgCu$_2$-type cubic structure (space group Fd-3m) at 300 K. The compound Tb$_{0.25}$Dy$_{0.25}$Ho$_{0.25}$Er$_{0.25}$ Al$_{2}$ orders ferromagnetically at 50 K (T$_C$). This value is almost equal to the average of the ferromagnetic ordering temperatures of the individual RAl$_2$ (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) compounds. Field dependence of magnetization below T$_C$ indicates soft-ferromagnetic nature. From the magnetization vs field data obtained near T$_C$ and the temperature dependence of heat capacity, low field magnetocaloric effect has been estimated.

• Generating long-distance magnetic couplings with flat bands

  One of the great challenges for the large-scale development of quantum technologies is to generate and control the entanglement of quantum bits through interactions of sufficiently long range. Two decades ago, spin chains have been proposed for quantum communication. Unfortunately, couplings are of very short range in general which drastically limits the communication to very short distances. Here, we demonstrate that the presence of flat bands (FBs) can trigger very long-distance magnetic couplings in spin chains. Furthermore, we show that the typical decaying lengthscale is directly related to the quantum metric of the flat band eigenstates. We have validated the robustness of our results in the case where flat bands become weakly dispersive. We believe that our unexpected findings could open up an alternative route to enable long-distance quantum communication.

• Single crystal growth of PrNiGe$_2$ compounds

  We report on the magnetic characterization of a praseodym intermetallic PrNiGe$_2$. Several single crystals are grown by the Czochralski method from Ni- deficient sample as the initial one. X-ray analysis of PrNi$_{0.8}$Ge$_2$ indicated the CeNiSi$_2$-type structure as the only phase. The magnetic measurements clearly indicate that PrNi$_x$Ge$_2$ exhibits a ferromagnetic orderings at 12 K, which is independent with of composition of Ni. A strong anisotropy along the three principal crystallographic directions was observed, reflecting the orthorhombic symmetry of the crystal structure. The $b$-axis was found to be the easy axis of magnetization.

• Chiral symmetry restoration with three chiral partners

  I discuss the masses of chiral partners in the context of chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature. Using the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model I first remind the usual situation where two mesons of opposed parity become degenerate above the chiral transition temperature. Then I consider an effective theory for D mesons where the positive parity companion presents a “double pole structure”. In this case three different masses need to be analyzed as functions of the temperature. I suggest a possible restoration pattern at high temperatures when the back-reaction of the quark condensate is incorporated.

• Topological defects in a double-mirror quadrupole insulator displace diverging charge

  We show that topological defects in quadrupole insulators do not host quantized fractional charges, contrary to what their Wannier representation indicates. In particular, we test the charge quantization hypothesis based on the Wannier representation of a disclination and a parametric defect. Since disclinations necessarily strain the lattice and parametric defects require closed curves in parameter space, both defects break four-fold rotation symmetry, even away from their origin. The Wannier representation of the defects is thus determined by local reflection symmetries. Contrary to the hypothesis, we find that the local charge density decays as $\sim 1/r^2$ with distance, leading to a diverging defect charge. Because topological defects are incompatible with four-fold rotation symmetry, we conclude that defect charge quantization is protected by sublattice symmetry, and not higher order topology.

• Variational solution of the superconducting Anderson impurity model and the band-edge singularity phenomena

  We propose a set of variational wavefunctions for the sub-gap spin-doublet and spin-singlet eigenstates of the particle-hole symmetric superconducting Anderson impurity model. The wavefunctions include up to two Bogoliubov quasiparticles in the continuum which is necessary to correctly capture the weak-coupling asymptotics in all parameter regimes. The eigenvalue problems reduce to solving transcendental equations. We investigate how the lowest singlet state evolves with increasing charge repulsion $U$, transitioning from a proximitized state (a superposition of empty and doubly occupied impurity orbitals, corresponding to an Andreev bound state) to a local moment that is Kondo screened by Bogoliubov quasiparticles (Yu-Shiba-Rusinov state). This change occurs for $U = 2\Delta$, where $\Delta$ is the BCS gap. At this point, the band-edge effects make the eigenenergy scale in a singular way as $\Gamma^{2/3}$, where $\Gamma$ is the hybridization strength. Away from this special point, regular $\Gamma$-linear behavior is recovered, but only for $\Gamma ≲ (U/2-\Delta)^2/\Delta$. The singular behavior thus extends over a broad range of parameters, including those relevant for some quantum devices in current use. The singular state is an equal-superposition state with maximal fluctuations between the local impurity charge configurations. Accurately capturing the band-edge singularity requires a continuum model, and it cannot be correctly described by discrete (truncated) models such as the zero-bandwidth approximation or the superconducting atomic limit. We determine the region of parameter space where the second spin-singlet state exists: in addition to the whole $U<2\Delta$ ABS region, it also includes a small part of the $U>2\Delta$ YSR region for finite values of $\Gamma$, as long as some ABS wavefunction component is admixed.

• Ruling out QCD phase transition as a PBH origin of LIGO/Virgo events

  The best-motivated scenario for a sizable primordial black hole (PBH) contribution to the LIGO/Virgo binary black hole mergers invokes the QCD phase transition, which naturally enhances the probability to form PBH with masses of stellar scale. We reconsider the expected mass function assuming a CMB-like primordial spectrum and associated not only to the QCD phase transition proper, but also the $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation process, and analyze the constraints on this scenario from a number of observations. We find that the scenario is not viable, unless an ad hoc mass evolution for the PBH mass function and a cutoff in power-spectrum very close to the QCD scale are introduced by hand.
