Pair binding and Hund’s rule breaking in high-symmetry fullerenes

Highly-symmetric molecules often exhibit degenerate tight-binding states at the Fermi edge. This typically results in a magnetic ground state if small interactions are introduced in accordance with Hund's rule. In some cases, Hund's rule may be broken, which signals pair binding and goes hand-in-hand with an attractive pair-binding energy. We investigate pair binding and Hund's rule breaking for the Hubbard model on high-symmetry fullerenes C$_{20}$, C$_{20}$, C$_{40}$, and C$_{60}$ by using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations. We exploit the SU(2) spin symmetry, the U(1) charge symmetry, and optionally the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ spatial rotation symmetry of the problem. For C$_{20}$, our results agree well with available exact-diagonalization data, but our approach is numerically much cheaper. We find a Mott transition at $U_c\sim2.2t$, which is much smaller than the previously reported value of $U_c\sim4.1t$ that was extrapolated from a few datapoints. We compute the pair-binding energy for arbitrary values of $U$ and observe that it remains overall repulsive. For larger fullerenes, we are not able to evaluate the pair binding energy with sufficient precision, but we can still investigate Hund's rule breaking. For C$_{28}$, we find that Hund's rule is fulfilled with a magnetic spin-2 ground state that transitions to a spin-1 state at $U_{c,1}\sim 5.4t$ before the eventual Mott transition to a spin singlet takes place at $U_{c,2}\sim 11.6t$. For C$_{40}$, Hund's rule is broken in the singlet ground state at half filling, but is restored if the system is doped with one electron. Hund's rule is also broken for C$_{60}$, and the doping with two or three electrons results in a minimum-spin state. Our results are consistent with an electronic mechanism of superconductivity for C$_{60}$ lattices. We speculate that the high geometric frustration of small fullerenes is detrimental to pair binding.
Majorana diagrammatics for quantum spin-1/2 models

A diagrammatic formalism for lattices of 1/2 is developed. It is based on an unconstrained mapping between spin and Majorana operators. This allows the use of standard tools of diagrammatic quantum many-body theory without requiring projections. We derive, in particular, the Feynman rules for the expansion around a color-preserving mean-field theory. We then present the numerical results obtained by computing the corrections up to second order for the Heisenberg model in one and two dimensions, showing that perturbative corrections are not only numerically important, but also qualitatively improve the results of mean-field theory. These results pave the way for the use of Majorana diagrammatic tools in theoretical and numerical studies of quantum spin systems.
Coherent generation and protection of anticoherent spin states

We report the first protocol specifically designed to generate anticoherent spin-$j$ states at different orders. The protocol consists of cycles of a rotation pulse about an axis followed by a squeezing pulse in a perpendicular direction. To protect these states, we develop dynamical decoupling techniques using group-based sequence design and the dynamically corrected gate formalism. We analyze key sources of dephasing, disorder, and dipole-dipole interactions and assess the effectiveness of our methods in preserving coherence. Potential applications of the produced anticoherent spin states include quantum sensing and studies related to quantum entanglement.
Tensorization of neural networks for improved privacy and interpretability

We present a tensorization algorithm for constructing tensor train/matrix product state (MPS) representations of functions, drawing on sketching and cross interpolation ideas. The method only requires black-box access to the target function and a small set of sample points defining the domain of interest. Thus, it is particularly well-suited for machine learning models, where the domain of interest is naturally defined by the training dataset. We show that this approach can be used to enhance the privacy and interpretability of neural network models. Specifically, we apply our decomposition to (i) obfuscate neural networks whose parameters encode patterns tied to the training data distribution, and (ii) estimate topological phases of matter that are easily accessible from the MPS representation. Additionally, we show that this tensorization can serve as an efficient initialization method for optimizing MPS in general settings, and that, for model compression, our algorithm achieves a superior trade-off between memory and time complexity compared to conventional tensorization methods of neural networks.

Quantifying the effects of noise in a quantum convolutional neural network

This study quantifies the effects of quantum noise on the performance of a quantum convolutional neural network (QCNN), building on parallels with classical convolutional neural networks (CNNs), where added Gaussian noise can improve training speed, accuracy, and generalizability. While such benefits are established for classical CNNs, the influence of noise on quantum counterparts remains insufficiently characterized. We specifically examine three types of quantum noise: decoherence, Gaussian noise arising from imperfect quantum gates and experimental error, and systematic noise introduced during input state preparation. Our analysis provides a detailed assessment of how these distinct noise sources affect QCNN operation and outlines considerations for mitigating their impact. Though a QCNN is used as an example in this work, the methods used here can be applied to other quantum machine learning models as well.
Is Herbertsmithite far from an ideal antiferromagnet? Ab-initio answer including in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and coupling with extra-plane impurities

Herbertsmithite is known as the archetype of a $S=1/2$ nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice, theoretically presumed to be a quantum gapless spin liquid. However, more and more experiments reveal that the model suffers from deviations from the ideal one, evidenced at very low temperatures. This detailed ab initio study focuses on two such deviations that have never been quantitatively calculated: the anisotropic exchange interactions and the Heisenberg exchange with extra-plane magnetic impurities. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is found to have an in-plane component almost three times larger than the out-of-plane component, but typically obviated in theoretical studies. Moreover, it is shown that the extra-plane magnetic impurities have a strong ferromagnetic interaction (approximatively one third of the main exchange $J_1$) with the kagomé magnetic sites. Combined with an estimated occurrence of these magnetic impurities of $\sim15\%$, the present results indicate that two-dimensional magnetic models only describe part of the physics.
Search for anomalous quartic gauge couplings in the process $\mu^+\mu^-\to \bar{\nu}\nu\gamma\gamma$ with a nested local outlier factor

In recent years, with the increasing luminosities of colliders, handling the growing amount of data has become a major challenge for future new physics (NP) phenomenological research. To improve efficiency, machine learning algorithms have been introduced into the field of high-energy physics. As a machine learning algorithm, the local outlier factor (LOF), and the nested LOF (NLOF) are potential tools for NP phenomenological studies. In this work, the possibility of searching for the signals of anomalous quartic gauge couplings (aQGCs) at muon colliders using the NLOF is investigated. Taking the process $\mu^+\mu^-\to \nu\bar{\nu}\gamma\gamma$ as an example, the signals of dimension-8 aQGCs are studied, expected coefficient constraints are presented. The event selection strategy uses unsupervised anomaly scores, with supervised optimization for EFT sensitivity. The NLOF algorithm is shown to outperform the k-means based anomaly detection methods, and a traditional counterpart.
Tunable quantum transport in flux-driven designer rings: Role of hopping dimerization, electron filling, and phase architecture

We explore quantum transport in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux, incorporating a quasiperiodic site potential based on a generalized cosine modulation with both primary and secondary components. Focusing on spinful, non-interacting electrons, we analyze persistent current behavior across a broad range of filling factors, Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) phase shifts, and hopping dimerizations. Our results uncover a rich interplay of localization-delocalization transitions, driven by the secondary modulation strength, leading to highly tunable and non-monotonic transport signatures. Persistent current is markedly enhanced near the symmetric hopping regime, where quantum interference dominates. In spin-imbalanced configurations, we identify regimes exhibiting pure spin current without net charge flow, suggesting potential for dissipationless spintronic functionalities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic study to examine quantum transport in such a flux-threaded SSH ring with dual-component quasiperiodic modulations, unifying re-entrant localization, spin-current generation, current stabilization, and phase-selective control. The inverse and normalized participation ratios, together with the state-resolved current, reveal the interplay between eigenstate localization and transport, providing insight into the microscopic mechanisms underlying current suppression and enhancement. For completeness, we also present the system-size dependence of the current. These findings position the quasiperiodic SSH ring as a versatile platform for realizing controllable quantum interference and spin-resolved transport in low-dimensional systems.
Coupled dynamics of resource competition and constrained entrances in a multi-lane bidirectional exclusion process

Motivated by the role of limited particle resources in multi-species bidirectional transport processes observed in various biological and physical systems, we investigate a one-dimensional closed system consisting of two parallel lanes with narrow entrances, where each lane accommodates two oppositely directed particle species. Each particle species is linked to a separate finite reservoir, which is coupled to both lanes and regulates the entry rates of particle into the lanes. To analyze the effect of finite particle reservoirs on the stationary properties of the system, we employ a mean-field theoretical framework to characterize the density profiles, particle currents, and phase behavior, complemented by a boundary layer analysis based on fixed point methods to capture spatial variations near the boundaries. The impact of individual species population, quantified by species-specific filling factors, is systematically examined under both equal and unequal conditions. For equal filling factors, system undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking and supports both symmetric and asymmetric phases. In contrast, for unequal filling factors, only asymmetric phases are realized, with the phase diagram exhibiting up to five distinct phases. A striking feature observed in both scenarios is the emergence of a back-and-forth transition, along with a non-monotonic dependence of the number of phases on the filling factors. All theoretical findings are extensively validated through stochastic simulations based on the Gillespie algorithm, confirming the robustness of the analytical results.
