• A spectator-model way to transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distribution functions

  We present exploratory analyses of the 3D gluon content of the proton via a study of unpolarized and polarized gluon TMDs at twist-2, calculated in a spectator model for the parent nucleon. Our approach embodies a flexible parametrization for the spectator-mass function, suited to describe both moderate and small-$x$ effects. All these studies can serve as a useful guidance in the investigation of the gluon dynamics inside nucleons and nuclei, which constitutes one of the major goals of new-generation colliding machines, as the EIC, the HL-LHC, NICA, and the FPF.

• The muX project

  The muX project is conducting a series of muonic X-ray measurements in medium- and high-Z nuclei at PSI, utilizing a high-purity germanium detector array, in-beam muon detectors, and a modern digital data-acquisition system. A novel hydrogen transfer target was developed, enabling measurements with as little as a few micrograms of target material. First measurements with radioactive Cm and Ra targets were conducted, aimed at determining their nuclear charge radii. These serve as important input for upcoming atomic parity violation experiments. The apparatus is also used to perform a feasibility study of an atomic parity violation experiment with the 2s − 1s muonic X-ray transition. In addition, the setup has been made available for a wider range of nuclear, particle, and solid-state physics measurements.

• A no-go theorem for non-standard explanations of the $\tau\to K_S\pi\nu_\tau$ CP asymmetry

  A new tensor interaction is the only possibility to explain the $2.8\sigma$ tension observed by the BaBar collaboration in the CP asymmetry in $\tau\to K_S\pi\nu_\tau$ with physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) realized above the electroweak scale. However, the strong phase generated by the interference between vector and tensor phases is suppressed by at least two orders of magnitude due to Watson's final-state-interaction theorem, and the strength of the CP-violating tensor interaction is strongly constrained by bounds from the neutron electric dipole moment and $D$-$\bar{D}$ mixing. As a result, a confirmation of the tension at Belle II would point to light BSM physics.

• Exclusive emissions of rho-mesons and the unintegrated gluon distribution

  Exclusive emissions of vector mesons in forward directions of rapidity offer us a faultless chance to probe the proton structure at small-$x$. A high-energy factorization formula is established within BFKL, given as the convolution of an impact factor depicting the forward-meson emission and of an unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD) driving the gluon evolution at small-$x$. As a nonperturbative quantity, the UGD is not well known and several models for it exist. We present recent progresses on the study of the exclusive forward $\rho$-meson leptoproduction at HERA and EIC energies, showing how osbervables sensitive to different polarization states of the $\rho$-particle act as discriminators for the existing UGD models.

• Jets in Evolving Matter within the Opacity Expansion Approach

  In a recent study [1] we have extended the opacity expansion approach to describe jet-medium interactions including medium motion effects in the context of heavy-ion collisions. We have computed color field of the in-medium sources, including the effects of the transverse field components and the energy transfer between the medium and jet. The corresponding contributions are sub-eikonal in nature, and were previously ignored in the literature. Here we discuss how our approach can be applied to describe the medium motion effects in the context of Deep Inelastic Scattering.

• MUSE: The MUon Scattering Experiment

  MUSE is a high-precision muon scattering experiment aiming to determine the proton radius. Muon, electron, and pion scattering will be measured at the same time. Two- photon exchange corrections will be determined with data using both beam polarities.

• The Meson Production Targets in the high energy beamline of HIPA at PSI

  Two target stations in the 590 MeV proton beamline of the High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA) at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) produce pions and muons for seven secondary beamlines, leading to several experimental stations. The two target stations are 18m apart. Target M is a graphite target with an effective thickness of 5mm, Target E is a graphite wheel with a thickness of 40 mm or 60 mm. Due to the spreading of the beam in the thick target, a high power collimator system is needed to shape the beam for further transport. The beam is then transported to either the SINQ target, a neutron spallation source, or stopped in the beam dump, where about 450 kW beam power is dissipated. In the following, the targets, collimators and beam dumps are further described.

• muCool: muon cooling for high-brightness μ+ beams

  A number of experiments with muons are limited by the poor phase space quality of the muon beams currently available. The muCool project aims at developing a phase-space cooling method to transform a surface μ+ beam with 4 MeV energy and 1 cm size into a slow muon beam with eV energy and 1 mm size. In this process the phase space is reduced by a factor of 10^9 − 10^10 with efficiencies of 2 · 10^−5 − 2 · 10^−4 . The beam is then re-accelerated to keV-MeV energies. Such a beam opens up new avenues for research in fundamental particle physics with muons and muonium atoms as well as in the field of μSR spectroscopy.

• Tau polarimetry in B meson decays

  This article summarizes recent developments in $B\to D^{(\ast)}\tau\nu$ decays. We explain how to extract the tau lepton's production properties from the kinematics of its decay products. The focus is on hadronic tau decays, which are most sensitive to the tau polarizations. We present new results for effects of new physics in tau polarization observables and quantify the observation prospects at BELLE II.

• Current status and prospects of muonium spectroscopy at PSI

  Recent and ongoing developments of low energy muon beamlines are heralding a new era of precision Muonium spectroscopy. While past spectroscopic measurements of Muonium were performed at pulsed muon facilities and were statistically limited, the advent of continuous low energy muon beams, such as at the LEM beamline at PSI, paired with the development of efficient muon-muonium converters and laser advancements, will overcome these limitations. Current experiments presently underway at the LEM facility and in the near future at the muCool beamline, which is under development at PSI, aim to improve the precision of both the 1S-2S transition determination and Lamb shift by several orders of magnitude. In this Chapter we give an overview of the current status and future prospects of these activities at PSI, highlighting how their projected significance fits into a broader context of other ongoing efforts worldwide.
