• Exponential enhancement of dark matter freezeout abundance

  A novel paradigm for thermal dark matter (DM), termed "bouncing dark matter", is presented. In canonical thermal DM scenarios, the DM abundance falls exponentially as the temperature drops below the mass of DM, until thermal freezeout occurs. This note explores a broader class of thermal DM models that are exceptions to this rule, where the DM abundance can deviate from the exponentially falling curve, and even rise exponentially, while in thermal equilibrium. Such scenarios can feature present day DM annihilation cross sections much larger than the canonical thermal target, improving the prospects for indirect detection of DM annihilation signals.

• Properties of non-relativistic string theory

  We show how Newton-Cartan geometry can be generalized to String Newton-Cartan geometry which is the geometry underlying non-relativistic string theory. Several salient properties of non-relativistic string theory in this geometric background are presented and a discussion of possible research for the future is outlined.

• Exotic structures in exotic nuclei

  Nuclei with proton and neutron numbers away from stability are known as exotic, and provide stringent tests of nuclear models, mainly developed for the description of stable nuclei. However, only the most extreme combinations lead to literally exotic structures, with sometimes unexpected properties. In this contribution we review some selected examples around the neutron dripline of very light elements: neutron halo structures with embedded substructures in the boron chain; the emission of neutron pairs in $^{16}$Be; and the existence of multi-neutron resonances in `superheavy' hydrogen isotopes.

• Composition dependence of the specific heat of FeSi

  Recently, a high-mobility surface conduction channel and in-gap states were identified in the correlated small-gap semiconductor FeSi using electrical transport measurements and high-resolution tunneling spectroscopy. The mobility of the charge carriers in the surface channel is quantitatively reminiscent of topological insulators, but displays a lack of sensitivity to the presence of ferromagnetic impurities as studied by means of a series of single crystals with slightly different starting compositions. Here, we report measurements of the specific heat of these crystals. At low temperatures, a shallow maximum is observed in the specific heat divided by temperature. This maximum is suppressed under magnetic field, characteristic of a Schottky anomaly associated with magnetic impurities. In comparison, the height of this maximum decreases with increasing initial iron content.

• De Sitter entropy as holographic entanglement entropy

  We review the results of refs. [1, 2], in which the entanglement entropy in spaces with horizons, such as Rindler or de Sitter space, is computed using holography. This is achieved through an appropriate slicing of anti-de Sitter space and the implementation of a UV cutoff. When the entangling surface coincides with the horizon of the boundary metric, the entanglement entropy can be identified with the standard gravitational entropy of the space. For this to hold, the effective Newton’s constant must be defined appropriately by absorbing the UV cutoff. Conversely, the UV cutoff can be expressed in terms of the effective Planck mass and the number of degrees of freedom of the dual theory. For de Sitter space, the entropy is equal to the Wald entropy for an effective action that includes the higher-curvature terms associated with the conformal anomaly. The entanglement entropy takes the expected form of the de Sitter entropy, including logarithmic corrections.

• A sharp transition in quantum chaos and thermodynamics of mass deformed SYK model

  We review our recent work [arXiv:2009.10759] where we studied the chaotic property of the two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems exhibiting a Hawking-Page like phase transition. By computing the out-of-time-ordered correlator in the large N limit by using the bilocal field formalism, we found that the chaos exponent of this model shows a discontinuous fall-off at the phase transition temperature. Hence in this model the Hawking-Page like transition is correlated with a transition in chaoticity, as expected from the relation between a black hole geometry and the chaotic behavior in the dual field theory.

• In-plane Fermi surface mapping of ZrSiS and HfSiS by de Haas-van Alphen oscillations

  We have conducted a comprehensive experimental investigation of the in-plane de Haas van Alphen quantum oscillations in ZrSiS and HfSiS and compared the results to the ab-initio calculations. We found a moderately good agreement for a set of frequencies located between 100 T and 200 T. These could be associated with extremal orbitals of the electron pockets located around the $k_z=\pm\pi/2c$ planes at the edge of the 1st Brillouin zone. In contrast, the experimentally detected low-frequency set of oscillations found around 20 T could not be reproduced by the calculations. Further refinement of the ab-initio calculation has to be conducted to fully capture all the observed features of the Fermi surface in ZrSiS and HfSiS.

• Two faces of Hawking radiation and thin-shell emission: pair-creation vs. tunneling

  We first revisit Hartle and Hawking's path integral derivation of Hawking radiation. In the first point of view, we interpret that a particle-antiparticle pair is created and the negative energy antiparticle falls into the black hole. On the other point of view, a particle inside the horizon, or beyond the Einstein-Rosen bridge, tunnels to outside the horizon, where this computation requires the analytic continuation of the time. These two faces of the Hawking radiation process can be extended to not only particles but also fields. As a concrete example, we study the thin-shell tunneling process; by introducing the antishell as a negative tension shell, we can give the consistent interpretation for two pictures, where one is a tunneling from inside to outside the horizon using instantons, while the other is a shell-antishell pair-creation. This shows that the Euclidean path integral indeed carries vast physical implications not only for perturbative, but also for non-perturbative processes.

• Applying machine learning methods to prediction problems of lattice observables

  We discuss the prediction of critical behavior of lattice observables in SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories. We show that feed-forward neural network, trained on the lattice configurations of gauge fields as input data, finds correlations with the target observable, which is also true in the critical region where the neural network has not been trained. We have verified that the neural network constructs a gauge-invariant function and this property does not change over the entire range of the parameter space.

• Photoproduction of diffractive dijets in Pythia 8

  The new framework for the simulations of hard diffractive events in photoproduction within Pythia 8 is presented. The model, originally introduced for proton-proton collisions, applies the dynamical rapidity gap survival probability based on the multiparton interaction model in Pythia. These additional interactions provide a natural explanation for the observed factorization-breaking effects in hard diffraction by filling up the rapidity gaps used to classify the events of diffractive origin. The generated cross sections are well in line with the existing data from HERA experiments and predictions for the future electron-ion collider are presented. In addition, also predictions for ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC have been calculated where the factorization-breaking effects are found to be more pronounced.
