On the unexpected fate of scientific ideas: An archeology of the Carroll group

In 1965, I published a paper, exhibiting a hitherto unknown limit of the Lorentz group, which I christened "Carroll group" due to its seemingly paradoxical physical contents. Since I saw it as more curious than relevant, I published it in French in a journal somewhat afar from the mainstream of theoretical physics at that time. It was most gratifying to witness the quite unexpected favour this paper started to enjoy half a century later, so much that a so-called "Carrollian physics" is now developing, with applications in various domains of forefront theoretical physics, such as quantum gravitation, supersymmetry, string theory, etc. I offer this narrative as an example of the very diverse time scales with which scientific ideas may develop — or not.

Anyons in a tight wave-guide and the Tonks-Girardeau gas

We consider a many-body system of 2D anyons, free quantum particles with general statistics parameter $\alpha ∈ ]0,2[$. In the magnetic gauge picture they are described as bosons attached to Aharonov-Bohm fluxes of intensity $2\pi \alpha$, generating long-range magnetic forces. A dimensional reduction to 1D is obtained by imposing a strongly anisotropic trapping potential. This freezes the motion in the direction of strong trapping, leading to 1D physics along the weak direction. The latter is governed to leading order by the Tonks-Girardeau model of impenetrable bosons, independently of $\alpha$.

Computation of entanglement entropy in inhomogeneous free fermions chains by algebraic Bethe ansatz

The computation of the entanglement entropy for inhomogeneous free fermions chains based on $q$-Racah polynomials is considered. The eigenvalues of the truncated correlation matrix are obtained from the diagonalization of the associated Heun operator via the algebraic Bethe Ansatz. In the special case of chains based on dual $q$-Hahn polynomials, the eigenvectors and eigenvalues are expressed in terms of symmetric polynomials evaluated on the Bethe roots.

Generalisation of affine Lie algebras on compact real manifolds

On old relations of Lie theory, classical geometry and gauge theory

Having been led by hadron interactions and low-energy photoproduction to SU(4) and non-compact SU*(4) symmetry, the general background turned out to be projective geometry (PG) of $P^3$, or when considering line and Complex geometry to include gauge theory, aspects of $P^5$. Point calculus and its dual completion by planes introduced quaternary (quadratic) "invariants" $x_{\mu}x^{\mu}=0$ and $p_{\mu}p^{\mu}=0$, and put focus on the intermediary form $(xu)$ and its treatment. Here, the major result is the identification of the symmetric 20 of SU(4) comprising nucleon and Delta states as related to the quaternary cubic forms discussed by Hilbert in his work on full invariant systems. So PG determines geometrically the scene by representations (reps) and invariant theory without having to force affine restrictions and additional (spinorial or gauge) rep theory.

Modified rational six vertex model on the rectangular lattice

We consider a rational six vertex model on a rectangular lattice with boundary conditions that generalize the usual domain wall type. We find that the partition function of the inhomogeneous version of this model is given by a modified Izergin determinant. The proofs are based on the quantum inverse scattering method and its representation theory together with elementary linear algebra.

Superconvergence of topological entropy in the symbolic dynamics of substitution sequences

We consider infinite sequences of superstable orbits (cascades) generated by systematic substitutions of letters in the symbolic dynamics of one-dimensional nonlinear systems in the logistic map universality class. We identify the conditions under which the topological entropy of successive words converges as a double exponential onto the accumulation point, and find the convergence rates analytically for selected cascades. Numerical tests of the convergence of the control parameter reveal a tendency to quantitatively universal double-exponential convergence. Taking a specific physical example, we consider cascades of stable orbits described by symbolic sequences with the symmetries of quasilattices. We show that all quasilattices can be realised as stable trajectories in nonlinear dynamical systems, extending previous results in which two were identified.

On the Virasoro fusion kernel at $c=25$

We find a formula for the Virasoro fusion kernel at $c=25$, in terms of the connection coefficients of the Painlevé VI differential equation. Our formula agrees numerically with previously known integral representations of the kernel. The derivation of our formula relies on a duality $c\to 26-c$ that is obeyed by the shift equations for the fusion and modular kernels. We conjecture that for $c<1$ the fusion and modular kernels are not smooth functions, but distributions.

Democratic actions with scalar fields: Symmetric sigma models, supergravity actions and the effective theory of the type IIB superstring

The dualization of the scalar fields of a theory into $(d-2)$-form potentials preserving all the global symmetries is one of the main problems in the construction of democratic pseudoactions containing simultaneously all the original fields and their duals. We study this problem starting with the simplest cases and we show how it can be solved for scalars parametrizing Riemannian symmetric $\sigma$-models as in maximal and half-maximal supergravities. Then, we use this result to write democratic pseudoactions for theories in which the scalars are non-minimally coupled to $(p+1)$-form potentials in any dimension. These results include a proposal of democratic pseudoaction for the generic bosonic sector of 4-dimensional maximal and half-maximal ungauged supergravities. Furthermore, we propose a democratic pseudoaction for the bosonic sector of $\mathcal{N}=2B,d=10$ supergravity (the effective action of the type IIB superstring theory) containing two 0-, two 2-, one 4-, two 6- and three 8-forms which is manifestly invariant under global SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ transformations.

Spectral properties of Levy Rosenzweig-Porter model via supersymmetric approach

By using the Efetov's super-symmetric formalism we computed analytically the mean spectral density $\rho(E)$ for the Lévy and the Lévy -Rosenzweig-Porter random matrices which off-diagonal elements are strongly non-Gaussian with power-law tails. This makes the standard Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation inapplicable to such problems. We used, instead, the functional Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation which allowed to solve the problem analytically for large sizes of matrices. We show that $\rho(E)$ depends crucially on the control parameter that drives the system through the transition between the ergodic and the fractal phases and it can be used as an order parameter.
