• NLO QCD corrections for off-shell $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$

  We present a full off-shell NLO QCD calculation of $pp \rightarrow e^+ \nu_e b \mu^- \bar{\nu}_\mu \bar{b} b \bar{b} + X$. Results are obtained using the \textsc{Helac-Nlo} Monte Carlo framework. We discuss a comparison to previous results and to experimental measurements. We also investigate the contribution of the initial states involving $b$-quarks and we introduce two $b$-jet tagging schemes.

• Domain-wall melting and entanglement in free-fermion chains with a band structure

  We study the melting of a domain wall in free-fermion chains, where the periodic variation of the hopping amplitudes gives rise to a band structure. It is shown that the entanglement grows logarithmically in time, and the prefactor is proportional to the number of filled bands in the initial state. For a dimerized chain the particle density and current are found to have the same expressions as in the homogeneous case, up to a rescaling of the velocity. The universal contribution to the entropy profile is then doubled, while the non-universal part can be extracted numerically from block-Toeplitz matrices.

• When does a Fermi puddle become a Fermi sea? Emergence of pairing in two-dimensional trapped mesoscopic Fermi gases

  Pairing lies at the heart of superfluidity in fermionic systems. Motivated by recent experiments in mesoscopic Fermi gases, we study up to six fermionic atoms with equal masses and equal populations in two different spin states, confined in a quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap. We couple a stochastic variational approach with the use of an explicitly correlated Gaussian basis set, which enables us to obtain highly accurate energies and structural properties. Utilising two-dimensional two-body scattering theory with a finite-range Gaussian interaction potential, we tune the effective range to model realistic quasi-two-dimensional scattering. We calculate the excitation spectrum, pair correlation function, and number of pairs as a function of increasing attractive interaction strength. For up to six fermions in the ground state, we find that opposite spin and momentum pairing is maximised well below the Fermi surface in momentum space. By contrast, corresponding experiments on twelve fermions have found that pairing is maximal at the Fermi surface and strongly suppressed beneath [M. Holten et al., Nature 606, 287-291 (2022)]. This suggests that the Fermi sea — which acts to suppress pairing at low momenta via Pauli blocking — emerges in the transition from six to twelve particles.

• Proposal for an autonomous quantum heat engine

  We propose and theoretically analyse a superconducting electric circuit which can be used to experimentally realize an autonomous quantum heat engine. Using a quasiclassical, non-Markovian theoretical model, we demonstrate that coherent microwave power generation can emerge solely from the heat flow through the circuit determined by non-linear circuit quantum electrodynamics. The predicted energy generation rate is sufficiently high for experimental observation with contemporary techniques, rendering this work a significant step toward the first experimental realization of an autonomous quantum heat engine based on Otto cycles.

• Functional renormalization group approach for signal detection

  This review paper utilizes renormalization group techniques for signal detection in nearly continuous positive spectra. We emphasize the universal aspects of the analogue field-theory approach. The primary objective is to present an extended self-consistent construction of the analogue effective field-theory framework for data, which can be interpreted as a maximum entropy model. In particular, we leverage universality arguments to justify the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the classical action, highlighting the existence of both a large-scale (local) regime and a small-scale (nonlocal) regime. Secondly, in relation to noise models, we observe the universal relationship between phase transitions and symmetry breaking near the detection threshold. Finally, we address the challenge of defining the covariance matrix for tensor-like data. Based on the cutting graph prescription, we note the superiority of definitions that rely on complete graphs of large size for data analysis.

• An introduction to large deviations with applications in physics

  These notes are based on the lectures that one of us (HT) gave at the Summer School on the "Theory of Large Deviations and Applications," held in July 2024 at Les Houches in France. They present the basic definitions and mathematical results that form the theory of large deviations, as well as many simple motivating examples of applications in statistical physics, which serve as a basis for the many other lectures given at the school that covered more specific applications in biophysics, random matrix theory, nonequilibrium systems, geophysics, and the simulation of rare events, among other topics. These notes extend the lectures, which can be accessed online, by presenting exercises and pointer references for further reading.

• Precision physics with the proton spectrometer and diffractive physics measurements from CMS

  We describe recent results from CMS and TOTEM on hard diffraction, diffractive jets and jet gap jet events. We also give the first sensitivities and limits on quartic anomalous couplings and axion-like particles at high mass using the LHC as a $\gamma \gamma$ collider. The predicted sensitivities with 300 fb$^{-1}$ are better by two or three orders of magnitude compared to the more standard methods at the LHC without measuring intact protons after collision.

• Probing $\delta_{CP}$ phase and charged lepton flavour violation with $A_4$ flavor symmetry and deviations to tri-bi-maximal mixing via $z_2 \times z_2$ invariant perturbation in the neutrino sector

  In this work, a flavour theory of a neutrino mass model based on $A_{4}$ symmetry is considered to explain the phenomenology of CP violation phase and charged lepton flavour violation. The spontaneous symmetry breaking of $A_{4}$ symmetry in this model leads to tribimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector at a leading order. $\mathrm{A} z_{2} × z_{2}$ invariant perturbations in this model is introduced in the neutrino sector which leads to testable predictions of $\theta_{13}$ and $\mathbf{C P}$ violation. We consider an effective theory with an $A_{4} × z_{2} × z_{2}$ symmetry, which after spontaneous symmetry breaking at high scale which is much higher than the electroweak scale leads to charged lepton flavour violation processes once the heavy Majorana neutrino mass degeneracy is lifted either by renormalization group effects or by a soft breaking of the $A_{4}$ symmetry.

• Pionic hydrogen and deuterium

  The measurement of strong-interaction shift and broadening in pionic hydrogen and deuterium yields pion-nucleon scattering lengths as well as the threshold pion-production strength on isoscalar NN pairs. Results from recent high-resolution experiments at PSI using crystal spectrometers allow important comparisons with the outcome of the modern low-energy description of QCD within the framework of effective field theories.
