Numerical cosmology

In these lecture notes, we describe the current state-of-the-art for numerical simulations of large-scale structure and galaxy formation. Numerical simulations play a central role in the preparation and the exploitation of large-scale galaxy surveys, in which galaxies are the fundamental observational objects. We first describe basic methods for collisionless N-body dynamics that enable us to model dark matter accurately by solving the Vlasov-Poisson equations. We then discuss simple methods to populate dark matter halos with galaxies, such as Halo and Sub-halo Abundance Matching techniques and baryonification techniques for capturing baryonic effects on the matter distribution. We finally describe how to model the gas component by solving the Euler-Poisson equations, focusing on the foundational assumptions behind these equations, namely local thermodynamical equilibrium, and the nature of the truncation errors of the numerical scheme, namely numerical diffusion. We show a few examples of simulations of a Milky-Way-like halo without cooling, with cooling and with star formation. We finally describe different subgrid prescriptions recently developed to model star formation, supernovae feedback and active galactic nuclei and how they impact cosmological simulations.
Les Houches lectures on two-dimensional gravity and holography

Lecture notes prepared for the Les Houches school ‘‘Quantum Geometry: Mathematical Methods for Gravity, Gauge Theories and Non-Perturbative Physics’’ that took place during the summer 2024. We cover the techniques to perform the exact gravitational path integral of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity, and supergravity, over spacetimes with arbitrary topology, with an application to black holes. We discuss the connection with random matrix models and moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces briefly, since those concepts were covered in other lectures of the school.
Theory-agnostic searches for non-gravitational modes in black hole ringdown

In any extension of General Relativity (GR), extra fundamental degrees of freedom couple to gravity. Besides deforming GR forecasts in a theory-dependent way, this coupling generically introduces extra modes in the gravitational-wave signal. We propose a novel theory-agnostic test of gravity to search for these nongravitational modes in black hole merger ringdown signals. To leading order in the GR deviations, their frequencies and damping times match those of a test scalar or vector field in a Kerr background, with only amplitudes and phases as free parameters. By applying this test to GW150914, GW190521, and GW200129, we find no strong evidence for an extra mode; however, its inclusion modifies the inferred distribution of the remnant spin. This test will be applicable for future detectors, which will achieve signal-to-noise ratios higher than 100 (and as high as 1000 for space-based detectors such as LISA). Such sensitivity will allow measurement of these modes with amplitude ratios as low as 0.02 for ground-based detectors (and as low as 0.003 for LISA), relative to the fundamental mode, enabling stringent agnostic constraints or detection of scalar/vector modes.
TOP2024: an overview of experimental results

The $17^\text{th}$ edition of the international workshop on top quark physics featured a diverse set of outstanding results. This note is an attempt to summarize the workshop from the experimental perspective and suggest ways forward for the future investigations. As it has not been possible to touch upon every single physics analysis in this note, interested reader are referred to individual proceedings for details.
On electroweak metastability and Higgs inflation

For the central values of the relevant experimental inputs, that is the strong coupling constant and the top quark and Higgs masses, the effective Higgs potential displays two minima, one at the electroweak scale and a deeper one at high energies. We review the phenomenology of the Higgs inflation model, extending the Standard Model to include a non-minimal coupling to gravity; as recently shown, even configurations that would be metastable in the Standard Model, become viable for inflation if the non-minimal coupling is large enough to flatten the Higgs potential at field values below the barrier between the minima.
Stability of the Higgs potential in the Standard Model and beyond

The question of stability of the Higgs potential in the Standard Model is revisited employing advanced theoretical precision and recent experimental results. We show that the top mass and strong coupling constants are key observables in order to reach or refute absolute stability. We highlight new physics scenarios that lead to a decisive stabilisation of the Higgs sector. These proceedings summarise findings first reported in [G. Hiller et al., Phys. Rev. D 106, 115004 (2022); Phys. Rev. D 110, 115017 (2024)].
ATLAS EFT results in the top quark sector

With no evidence of direct production of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles at the TeV scale, deviations from the Standard Model (SM) can be explored systematically through Effective Field Theories (EFTs) such as the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT). The SMEFT, a framework for probing BSM effects, extends the SM by introducing higher-dimensional operators parameterized by Wilson coefficients. This contribution highlights three recent analyses using the ATLAS Run-2 dataset at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 140 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. Combined measurements enhance sensitivity to Wilson coefficients, exploring the potential of SMEFT in the top quark sector.
Combined EFT interpretation of top quark, Higgs boson, electroweak and QCD measurements at CMS

A recent EFT result from CMS is presented, combining differential cross section and direct EFT measurements performed by the CMS Collaboration across four branches of the Standard Model: top, Higgs, electroweak and QCD physics. To maximize the sensitivity, measurements of electroweak precision observables from LEP and SLC are included as well. 64 Wilson Coefficients (WC) are targeted in this combined measurement, both individually and with a simultaneous fit to 42 linear combinations of the Wilson Coefficients.
Searches for top-associated dark matter production at the LHC

Recent searches for dark matter (DM) produced in association with top quarks from the ATLAS and CMS experiments using data collected between 2015 and 2018 are presented. These comprise searches from both experiments for DM in association with a single top quark; an improved ATLAS search for DM in single lepton $t\bar{t}$ final states; an ATLAS search for stop squarks decaying to a top quark, a charm quark and neutralinos; and a CMS search for DM produced in association with a pair of top quarks or a single top. These analyses feature novel machine learning and advanced background estimation techniques. No statistically significant excess is observed in any of these searches.
Constraining the SMEFT at present and future colliders

We present results from SMEFiT3.0, a global SMEFT fit of Higgs, top quark, and diboson production data from the LHC. Our updated analysis includes recent inclusive and differential measurements from the LHC Run II, together with the exact implementation of electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) from LEP and SLD. We then analyse the impact of HL-LHC measurements by adding to SMEFiT3.0 the projections obtained by extrapolating from Run II data. Finally we estimate the potential of two proposed high-energy circular $e^+e^-$ colliders, the FCC-ee and the CEPC, in further improving the bounds on the SMEFT parameters.
