• Screw dislocations in the X-cube fracton model

  The X-cube model, a prototypical gapped fracton model, has been shown to have a foliation structure. That is, inside the 3+1D model, there are hidden layers of 2+1D gapped topological states. A screw dislocation in a 3+1D lattice can often reveal nontrivial features associated with a layered structure. In this paper, we study the X-cube model on lattices with screw dislocations. In particular, we find that a screw dislocation results in a finite change in the logarithm of the ground state degeneracy of the model. Part of the change can be traced back to the effect of screw dislocations in a simple stack of 2+1D topological states, hence corroborating the foliation structure in the model. The other part of the change comes from the induced motion of fractons or sub-dimensional excitations along the dislocation, a feature absent in the stack of 2+1D layers.

• Deconstructing S-Duality

  We use the technique of deconstruction to lift dualities from 2+1 to 3+1 dimensions. In this work we demonstrate the basic idea by deriving S-duality of maximally supersymmetric electromagnetism in 3+1 dimensions from mirror symmetry in 2+1. We also study the deconstruction of a non-supersymmetric duality in 3+1 dimensions using Abelian bosonization in 2+1 dimensions.

• Inferring effective couplings with restricted Boltzmann machines

  Generative models offer a direct way of modeling complex data. Energy-based models attempt to encode the statistical correlations observed in the data at the level of the Boltzmann weight associated with an energy function in the form of a neural network. We address here the challenge of understanding the physical interpretation of such models. In this study, we propose a simple solution by implementing a direct mapping between the Restricted Boltzmann Machine and an effective Ising spin Hamiltonian. This mapping includes interactions of all possible orders, going beyond the conventional pairwise interactions typically considered in the inverse Ising (or Boltzmann Machine) approach, and allowing the description of complex datasets. Earlier works attempted to achieve this goal, but the proposed mappings were inaccurate for inference applications, did not properly treat the complexity of the problem, or did not provide precise prescriptions for practical application. To validate our method, we performed several controlled inverse numerical experiments in which we trained the RBMs using equilibrium samples of predefined models with local external fields, 2-body and 3-body interactions in different sparse topologies. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach in learning the correct interaction network and pave the way for its application in modeling interesting binary variable datasets. We also evaluate the quality of the inferred model based on different training methods.

• Critical loop models are exactly solvable

  In two-dimensional critical loop models, including the O(n) and Potts models, the spectrum is exactly known, as are a few structure constants or ratios thereof. Using numerical conformal bootstrap methods, we study 235 of the simplest 4-point structure constants. For each structure constant, we find an analytic expression as a product of two factors: 1) a universal function of conformal dimensions, built from Barnes' double Gamma function, and 2) a polynomial function of loop weights, whose degree obeys a simple upper bound. We conjecture that all structure constants are of this form. For a few 4-point functions, we build corresponding observables in a lattice loop model. From numerical lattice results, we extract amplitude ratios that depend neither on the lattice size nor on the lattice coupling. These ratios agree with the corresponding ratios of 4-point structure constants.

• Dissipative cooling induced by pulse perturbations

  We investigate the dynamics brought on by an impulse perturbation in two infinite-range quantum Ising models coupled to each other and to a dissipative bath. We show that, if dissipation is faster the higher the excitation energy, the pulse perturbation cools down the low-energy sector of the system, at the expense of the high-energy one, eventually stabilising a transient symmetry-broken state at temperatures higher than the equilibrium critical one. Such non-thermal quasi-steady state may survive for quite a long time after the pulse, if the latter is properly tailored.

• Linear growth of the entanglement entropy for quadratic Hamiltonians and arbitrary initial states

  We prove that the entanglement entropy of any pure initial state of a bipartite bosonic quantum system grows linearly in time with respect to the dynamics induced by any unstable quadratic Hamiltonian. The growth rate does not depend on the initial state and is equal to the sum of certain Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding classical dynamics. This paper generalizes the findings of [Bianchi et al., JHEP 2018, 25 (2018)], which proves the same result in the special case of Gaussian initial states. Our proof is based on a recent generalization of the strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy for bosonic quantum systems [De Palma et al., arXiv:2105.05627]. This technique allows us to extend our result to generic mixed initial states, with the squashed entanglement providing the right generalization of the entanglement entropy. We discuss several applications of our results to physical systems with (weakly) interacting Hamiltonians and periodically driven quantum systems, including certain quantum field theory models.

• Non-Markovian noise that cannot be dynamically decoupled by periodic spin echo pulses

  Dynamical decoupling is the leading technique to remove unwanted interactions in a vast range of quantum systems through fast rotations. But what determines the time-scale of such rotations in order to achieve good decoupling? By providing an explicit counterexample of a qubit coupled to a charged particle and magnetic monopole, we show that such time-scales cannot be decided by the decay profile induced by the noise: even though the system shows a quadratic decay (a Zeno region revealing non-Markovian noise), it cannot be decoupled by periodic spin echo pulses, no matter how fast the rotations.

• Dual dressed black holes as the end point of the charged superradiant instability in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Yang Mills

  Charged Black holes in $AdS_5 × S^5$ suffer from superradiant instabilities over a range of energies. Hairy black hole solutions (constructed within gauged supergravity) have previously been proposed as endpoints to this instability. We demonstrate that these hairy black holes are themselves unstable to the emission of large dual giant gravitons. We propose that the endpoint to this instability is given by Dual Dressed Black Holes (DDBH)s; configurations consisting of one, two, or three very large dual giant gravitons surrounding a core $AdS$ black hole with one, two, or three $SO(6)$ chemical potentials equal to unity. The dual giants each live at $AdS$ radial coordinates of order $\sqrt{N}$ and each carry charge of order $N^2$. The large separation makes DDBHs a very weakly interacting mix of their components and allows for a simple computation of their thermodynamics. We conjecture that DDBHs dominate the phase diagram of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills over a range of energies around the BPS plane, and provide an explicit construction of this phase diagram, briefly discussing the interplay with supersymmetry. We develop the quantum description of dual giants around black hole backgrounds and explicitly verify that DDBHs are stable to potential tunneling instabilities, precisely when the chemical potentials of the core black holes equal unity. We also construct the 10-dimensional DDBH bulk solutions.

• The geometry of cosmological correlators

  We provide a first principle definition of cosmological correlation functions for a large class of scalar toy models in arbitrary FRW cosmologies, in terms of novel geometries we name weighted cosmological polytopes. Each of these geometries encodes a universal rational integrand associated to a given Feynman graph. In this picture, all the possible ways of organising, and computing, cosmological correlators correspond to triangulations and subdivisions of the geometry, containing the in-in representation, the one in terms of wavefunction coefficients and many others. We also provide two novel contour integral representations, one connecting higher and lower loop correlators and the other one expressing any of them in terms of a building block. We study the boundary structure of these geometries allowing us to prove factorisation properties and Steinmann-like relations when single and sequential discontinuities are approached. We also show that correlators must satisfy novel vanishing conditions. As the weighted cosmological polytopes can be obtained as an orientation-changing operation onto a certain subdivision of the cosmological polytopes encoding the wavefunction of the Universe, this picture allows us to sharpen how the properties of cosmological correlators are inherited from the ones of the wavefunction. From a mathematical perspective, we also provide an in-depth characterisation of their adjoint surface.

• Automation of Beam and Jet functions at NNLO

  We present a novel framework to streamline the calculation of jet and beam functions to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. By exploiting the infrared behaviour of the collinear splitting functions, we factorise the singularities with suitable phase-space parametrisations and perform the observable-dependent integrations numerically. We have implemented our approach in the publicly available code {\tt pySecDec} and present first results for sample jet and beam functions.
