• Separability and entanglement of resonating valence-bond states

  We investigate separability and entanglement of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) states and resonating valence-bond (RVB) states. These states play a prominent role in condensed matter physics, as they can describe quantum spin liquids and quantum critical states of matter, depending on their underlying lattices. For dimer RK states on arbitrary tileable graphs, we prove the exact separability of the reduced density matrix of $k$ disconnected subsystems, implying the absence of bipartite and multipartite entanglement between the subsystems. For more general RK states with local constraints, we argue separability in the thermodynamic limit, and show that any local RK state has zero logarithmic negativity, even if the density matrix is not exactly separable. In the case of adjacent subsystems, we find an exact expression for the logarithmic negativity in terms of partition functions of the underlying statistical model. For RVB states, we show separability for disconnected subsystems up to exponentially small terms in the distance $d$ between the subsystems, and that the logarithmic negativity is exponentially suppressed with $d$. We argue that separability does hold in the scaling limit, even for arbitrarily small ratio $d/L$, where $L$ is the characteristic size of the subsystems. Our results hold for arbitrary lattices, and encompass a large class of RK and RVB states, which include certain gapped quantum spin liquids and gapless quantum critical systems.

• Optimal control for Hamiltonian parameter estimation in non-commuting and bipartite quantum dynamics

  The ability to characterise a Hamiltonian with high precision is crucial for the implementation of quantum technologies. In addition to the well-developed approaches utilising optimal probe states and optimal measurements, the method of optimal control can be used to identify time-dependent pulses applied to the system to achieve higher precision in the estimation of Hamiltonian parameters, especially in the presence of noise. Here, we extend optimally controlled estimation schemes for single qubits to non-commuting dynamics as well as two interacting qubits, demonstrating improvements in terms of maximal precision, time-stability, as well as robustness over uncontrolled protocols.

• Boundary conditions for extremal black holes from 2d gravity

  We devise new boundary conditions for the near-horizon geometries of extremal BTZ and Kerr black holes, as well as for the ultra-cold limit of the Kerr-de Sitter black hole. These boundary conditions are obtained as the higher-dimensional uplift of recently proposed boundary conditions in two-dimensional gravity. Their asymptotic symmetries consist in the semi-direct product of a Virasoro and a current algebra, of which we determine the central extensions.

• Electric polarization and magnetization in metals

  A feature of the "modern theory" is that electric polarization is not well-defined in a metallic ground state. A different approach invokes the general existence of a complete set of exponentially localized Wannier functions, with respect to which general definitions of microscopic electronic polarization and magnetization fields, and free charge and current densities are always admitted. These definitions assume no particular initial electronic state of the crystal, and the set of microscopic fields satisfy the usual relations of classical electrodynamics. Notably, when applied to a trivial insulator initially occupying its $T=0$ ground state, the expressions for the unperturbed polarization and orbital magnetization, and for the orbital magnetoelectric polarizability tensor obtained from these different approaches can agree. However, the "modern theory of magnetization" has been extended via thermodynamic arguments to include metals and Chern insulators. We here compare with that generalization and find disagreement; the manner in which the expressions differ elucidates the distinct philosophies of these approaches. Our approach leads to the usual electrical conductivity tensor in the long-wavelength limit; in the absence of any scattering mechanisms, the dc divergence of that tensor is due to the free current density and the finite-frequency generalization of the anomalous Hall contribution arises from a combination of bound and free current densities. As well, in the limit that the electronic ground state is that of a trivial insulator, our expressions reduce to those expected for the unperturbed polarization and magnetization, and the electric susceptibility.

• Rank one HCIZ at high temperature: interpolating between classical and free convolutions

  We study the rank one Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral in the limit where $\frac{N \beta}{2} \to c $, called the high temperature regime and show that it can be used to construct a promising one-parameter interpolation, with parameter $c$ between the classical and the free convolution. This $c$-convolution has a simple interpretation in terms of another associated family of distribution indexed by $c$, called the Markov-Krein transform: the $c$-convolution of two distributions corresponds to the classical convolution of their Markov-Krein transforms. We derive first cumulants-moments relations, a central limit theorem, a Poisson limit theorem and shows several numerical examples of $c$-convoluted distributions.

• Quantum chaos in perturbative super-Yang-Mills Theory

  We provide numerical evidence that the perturbative spectrum of anomalous dimensions in maximally supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory is chaotic at finite values of $N$. We calculate the probability distribution of one-loop level spacings for subsectors of the theory and show that for large $N$ it is given by the Poisson distribution of integrable models, while at finite values it is the Wigner-Dyson distribution of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble random matrix theory. We extend these results to two-loop order and to a one-parameter family of deformations. We further study the spectral rigidity for these models and show that it is also well described by random matrix theory. Finally we demonstrate that the finite-$N$ eigenvectors possess properties of chaotic states.

• Classifying the CP properties of the ggH coupling in H + 2j production

  The Higgs-gluon interaction is crucial for LHC phenomenology. To improve the constraints on the $\mathcal{CP}$ structure of this coupling, we investigate Higgs production with two jets using machine learning. In particular, we exploit the $\mathcal{CP}$ sensitivity of the so far neglected phase space region that differs from the typical vector boson fusion-like kinematics. Our results indicate that further improvements in the current experimental limits could be achievable using our techniques. We also discuss the most relevant observables and how $\mathcal{CP}$ violation in the Higgs–gluon interaction can be disentangled from $\mathcal{CP}$ violation in the interaction between the Higgs boson and massive vector bosons. Assuming the absence of $\mathcal{CP}$-violating Higgs interactions with coloured beyond-the-Standard-Model states, our projected limits on a $\mathcal{CP}$-violating top-Yukawa coupling are competitive with more direct probes like top-associated Higgs production and limits from a global fit.

• Hybrid high-energy/collinear factorization in a heavy-light dijets system reaction

  We propose the inclusive hadroproduction of a heavy-light dijet system, as a new channel for the investigation of high energy QCD. We build up a hybrid factorization that incorporates a partial next-to-leading BFKL resummation inside the standard collinear description of observables. We present a detailed analysis of different observables: cross-section summed over azimuthal angles and differential in rapidity and azimuthal distribution. The stability that these distributions show under higher-order corrections motivates our interest in future studies, doable at new generation colliding machines.

• Strength in numbers: Optimal and scalable combination of LHC new-physics searches

  To gain a comprehensive view of what the LHC tells us about physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), it is crucial that different BSM-sensitive analyses can be combined. But in general search-analyses are not statistically orthogonal, so performing comprehensive combinations requires knowledge of the extent to which the same events co-populate multiple analyses' signal regions. We present a novel, stochastic method to determine this degree of overlap, and a graph algorithm to efficiently find the combination of signal regions with no mutual overlap that optimises expected upper limits on BSM-model cross-sections. The gain in exclusion power relative to single-analysis limits is demonstrated with models with varying degrees of complexity, ranging from simplified models to a 19-dimensional supersymmetric model.

• Scattering Amplitudes and BCFW in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ Theory

  We use massive spinor helicity formalism to study scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. We compute the amplitudes at an arbitrary point in the Coulomb branch of this theory. We compute amplitudes using projection from $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory and write three point amplitudes in a convenient form using special kinematics. We then compute four point amplitudes by carrying out massive BCFW shifts of the amplitudes. We find some of the shifted amplitudes have a pole at $z=\infty$. Taking the residue at $z=\infty$ into account ensures little group covariance of the final result.
