• Electronic structure of liquid xenon in the context of light dark matter direct detection

  We present a description of the electronic structure of xenon within the density-functional theory formalism with the goal of accurately modeling dark-matter-induced ionisation in liquid xenon detectors. We compare the calculated electronic structures of the atomic, liquid and crystalline solid phases, and find that the electronic charge density and its derivatives in momentum space are similar in the atom and the liquid, consistent with the weak interatomic van der Waals bonding. The only notable difference is a band broadening of the highest occupied $5p$ levels, reflected in the densities of states of the condensed phases, as a result of the inter-atomic interactions. We therefore use the calculated density of states of the liquid phase, combined with the standard literature approach for the isolated atom, to recompute ionisation rates and exclusion limit curves for the XENON10 and XENON1T experiments. We find that the broadening of the 5$p$ levels induced by the liquid phase is relevant only for dark matter masses below 6 MeV, where it increases the ionisation rate relative to that of the isolated atom. For most of the explored mass range, the energies of the discrete 4$d$ and 5$s$ levels have the strongest effect on the rate. Our findings suggest a simple scheme for calculating dark matter-electron scattering rates in liquid noble gas detectors, using the calculated values for the atom weighted by the density of states of the condensed phase.

• Theoretical modeling of QCD radiation in off-shell Higgs production through gluon fusion

  The measurement of the Higgs boson width is a critical test of the Standard Model, with significant implications for understanding electroweak symmetry breaking. Direct measurements are limited by detector resolution, but it can be measured with greater precision through a combined analysis of on-shell and off-shell Higgs boson production. While results for on-shell production have been computed to a very high accuracy, theoretical predictions for off-shell Higgs boson production are not as well controlled due to the breakdown of the heavy-top approximation and the large interference with non-resonant amplitudes. Seeking to understand and improve the theoretical control, we compare leading-order and next-to-leading-order plus parton shower differential cross-sections for signal, background, and full physical processes in off-shell Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron Collider, using Powheg, MadGraph, and Sherpa. We analyze the impact of higher-order quantum chromodynamics effects and theoretical uncertainties, highlighting differences between predictions using jet merging with parton showers, and those from next-to-leading order computations matched to parton showers. The results provide insights for improving theoretical predictions and their application to experimental measurements in the future.

  Recent results on studies of exotic hadrons at the LHCb experiment are summarised. These are the observation of new resonances decaying to J/$\psi K^{+}$ and J/$\psi\phi$, evidence of a J/$\psi\Lambda$ structure and observation of excited $\Xi^{-}$ states in the $\Xi_{b}^{-}\to J/\psi \Lambda K^{-}$ decay and the study of $B_{s}^{0}\to J/\psi\pi^{+}\pi^{-}K^{+}K^{-}$ decays.

• Neutron production in ($\alpha$,n) reactions in SOURCES4

  Neutrons produced in spontaneous fission and ($\alpha,n$) reactions can induce background events in underground experiments looking for rare processes. A number of computer codes are available to calculate cross-sections of ($\alpha,n$) reactions, branching ratios to various states and neutron yields. SOURCES4 code has been used in this work to calculate neutron yields and energy spectra with input cross-sections and branching ratios taken from experimental data and models from EMPIRE2.19/3.2.3 and TALYS1.9 codes. A comparison of SOURCES4 calculations with experimental data from alpha beams and radioactive decay chains is presented.

• The 3d $A$-model and generalised symmetries, part I: Bosonic Chern-Simons theories

  The 3d $A$-model is a two-dimensional approach to the computation of supersymmetric observables of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. In principle, it allows us to compute half-BPS partition functions on any compact Seifert three-manifold (as well as of expectation values of half-BPS lines thereon), but previous results focussed on the case where the gauge group $\widetilde G$ is a product of simply-connected and/or unitary gauge groups. We are interested in the more general case of a compact gauge group $G=\widetilde G/\Gamma$, which is obtained from the $\widetilde G$ theory by gauging a discrete one-form symmetry. In this paper, we discuss in detail the case of pure $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons theories (without matter) for simple groups $G$. When $G=\widetilde G$ is simply-connected, we demonstrate the exact matching between the supersymmetric approach in terms of Seifert fibering operators and the 3d TQFT approach based on topological surgery in the infrared Chern-Simons theory $\widetilde G_k$, including through the identification of subtle counterterms that relate the two approaches. We then extend this discussion to the case where the Chern-Simons theory $G_k$ can be obtained from $\widetilde G_k$ by the condensation of abelian anyons which are bosonic. Along the way, we revisit the 3d $A$-model formalism by emphasising its 2d TQFT underpinning.

• Thermoelectric coefficients and the figure of merit for large open quantum dots

  We consider the thermoelectric response of chaotic or disordered quantum dots in the limit of phase-coherent transport, statistically described by random matrix theory. We calculate the full distribution of the thermoelectric coefficients (Seebeck $S$ and Peltier $\Pi$), and the thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$, for large open dots at arbitrary temperature and external magnetic field, when the number of modes in the left and right leads ($N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm R}$) are large. Our results show that the thermoelectric coefficients and $ZT$ are maximal when the temperature is half the Thouless energy, and the magnetic field is negligible. They remain small, even at their maximum, but they exhibit a type of universality at all temperatures, in which they do not depend on the asymmetry between the left and right leads $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm R})$, even though they depend on $(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm R})$.

• Conformal maps and superfluid vortex dynamics on curved and bounded surfaces: The case of an elliptical boundary

  Recent advances in cold-atom platforms have made real-time dynamics accessible, renewing interest in the motion of superfluid vortices in two-dimensional domains. Here we show that the energy and the trajectories of arbitrary vortex configurations may be computed on a complicated (curved or bounded) surface, provided that one knows a conformal map that links the latter to a simpler domain (like the full plane, or a circular boundary). We also prove that Hamilton's equations based on the vortex energy agree with the complex dynamical equations for the vortex dynamics, demonstrating that the vortex trajectories are constant-energy curves. We use these ideas to study the dynamics of vortices in a two-dimensional incompressible superfluid with an elliptical boundary, and we derive an analytical expression for the complex potential describing the hydrodynamic flow throughout the fluid. For a vortex inside an elliptical boundary, the orbits are nearly self-similar ellipses.

• High field magnetism of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_3$ under high pressure

  Magnetization measurements of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_{3}$ at 1.4 K for $H \parallel c$ were performed in pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 51 T under high pressures of up to 0.80 GPa. At ambient pressure, the magnetization below $H_{\rm c1}$ = 4 T is small, and then it changes steeply between $H_{\rm c1}$ and $H_{\rm c2}$ = 12 T, followed by a gradual increase in magnetization up to $H_{\rm m}$ = 33 T where a two-step metamagnetic transition occurs. With increasing pressure, the $H_{\rm c1}$ and $H_{\rm m}$ shifted to the low-field side, while the $H_{\rm c2}$ shifted to the opposite side. The change in $H_{\rm m}$ may depend on the difference in the single-ion anisotropies on pressure in the lowest $J$ = 1 and the excited $J$ = 2 states.

• Three-nucleon force effects in the FSI configuration of the d(n, nn)p breakup reaction

  We investigated three-nucleon (3N) force effects in the final state interaction (FSI) configuration of the d(n, nn)p breakup reaction at the incoming nucleon energy E n = 200 MeV. Although 3N force effects for the elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering cross section at comparable energies are located predominantly in the region of intermediate and backward angles, the corresponding 3N force effects for the integrated FSI configuration breakup cross section are found also at forward scattering angles.

• Quantum chaos, randomness and universal scaling of entanglement in various Krylov spaces

  Multipartite entanglement is a crucial resource for advancing quantum technologies, with considerable research efforts directed toward achieving its rapid and scalable generation. In this work, we derive an analytical expression for the time-averaged quantum Fisher information (QFI), enabling the detection of scalable multipartite entanglement dynamically generated by all quantum chaotic systems governed by Dyson's ensembles. Our approach integrates concepts of randomness and quantum chaos, demonstrating that the QFI is universally determined by the structure and dimension of the Krylov space that confines the chaotic dynamics. In particular, the QFI ranges from $N^2/3$ for $N$ qubits in the permutation-symmetric subspace (e.g. for chaotic kicked top models with long-range interactions), to $N$ when the dynamics extend over the full Hilbert space with or without bit reversal symmetry or parity symmetry (e.g. in chaotic models with short-range Ising-like interactions). In the former case, the QFI reveals multipartite entanglement among $N/3$ qubits and highlights the power of chaotic collective spin systems in generating scalable multipartite entanglement. Interestingly this result can be related to isotropic substructures in the Wigner distribution of chaotic states and demonstrates the efficacy of quantum chaos for Heisenberg-scaling quantum metrology. Finally, our general expression for the QFI agrees with that obtained for random states and, differently from out-of-time-order-correlators, it can also distinguish chaotic from integrable unstable spin dynamics.
