• Lattice simulations of the QCD chiral transition at real $\mu_B$

  Most lattice studies of hot and dense QCD matter rely on extrapolation from zero or imaginary chemical potentials. The ill-posedness of numerical analytic continuation puts severe limitations on the reliability of such methods. We studied the QCD chiral transition at finite real baryon density with the more direct sign reweighting approach. We simulate up to a baryochemical potential-temperature ratio of $\mu_B/T=2.7$, covering the RHIC Beam Energy Scan range, and penetrating the region where methods based on analytic continuation are unpredictive. This opens up a new window to study QCD matter at finite $\mu_B$ from first principles.

• The scalar and tensor glueball in production and decay

  Evidence for the scalar and the tensor glueball is reported. The evidence stems from an analysis of BESIII data on radiative $J/\psi$ data into $\pi^0\pi^0$, $K_SK_S$, $\eta\eta$, and $\phi\omega$ [1]. The coupled-channel analysis is contrained by a large number of further data. The scalar intensity is described by ten scalar isoscalar mesons, covering the range from $f_0(500)$ to $f_0(2330)$. Five resonances are interpreted as mainly-singlet states in SU(3), five as mainly-octet states. The mainly-singlet resonances are produced over the full mass range, the production of octet states is limited to the 1500 to 2100 MeV mass range and shows a large peak. The peak is interpreted as scalar glueball. Its mass, width and yield are determined to $\rm M_{glueball}=(1865\pm 25)$ MeV, $\Gamma_{\rm glueball} =\rm (370\pm 50^{+30}_{-20}) MeV$, $\rm Y_{J/\psi\to \gamma G_0}=(5.8\pm1.0)\cdot 10^{-3}$. The study of the decays of the scalar mesons identifies significant glueball fractions [2]. The tensor wave shows the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2'(1525)$ and a small enhancement at $M=2210\pm40$ MeV, $\Gamma=\rm (355^{+60}_{-30}) MeV$ [3]. An interpretation of these data is suggested.

• Development of a cold atomic muonium beam for next generation atomic physics and gravity experiments

  A high-intensity, low-emittance atomic muonium (M) beam is being developed, which would enable improving the precision of M spectroscopy measurements, and may allow a direct observation of the M gravitational interaction. Measuring the free fall of M atoms would be the first test of the weak equivalence principle using elementary antimatter ($\mu^+$) and a purely leptonic system. Such an experiment relies on the high intensity, continuous muon beams available at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland), and a proposed novel M source. In this paper, the theoretical motivation and principles of this experiment are described.

• muCool: muon cooling for high-brightness μ+ beams

  A number of experiments with muons are limited by the poor phase space quality of the muon beams currently available. The muCool project aims at developing a phase-space cooling method to transform a surface μ+ beam with 4 MeV energy and 1 cm size into a slow muon beam with eV energy and 1 mm size. In this process the phase space is reduced by a factor of 10^9 − 10^10 with efficiencies of 2 · 10^−5 − 2 · 10^−4 . The beam is then re-accelerated to keV-MeV energies. Such a beam opens up new avenues for research in fundamental particle physics with muons and muonium atoms as well as in the field of μSR spectroscopy.

• Current status and prospects of muonium spectroscopy at PSI

  Recent and ongoing developments of low energy muon beamlines are heralding a new era of precision Muonium spectroscopy. While past spectroscopic measurements of Muonium were performed at pulsed muon facilities and were statistically limited, the advent of continuous low energy muon beams, such as at the LEM beamline at PSI, paired with the development of efficient muon-muonium converters and laser advancements, will overcome these limitations. Current experiments presently underway at the LEM facility and in the near future at the muCool beamline, which is under development at PSI, aim to improve the precision of both the 1S-2S transition determination and Lamb shift by several orders of magnitude. In this Chapter we give an overview of the current status and future prospects of these activities at PSI, highlighting how their projected significance fits into a broader context of other ongoing efforts worldwide.

• Indirect searches for dark matter with the nEDM spectrometer

  The nEDM apparatus at PSI has been used to search for different dark matter signatures utilizing its high sensitivity to shifts in the neutron precession frequency and its well-controlled low magnetic field at the microT level. Such a shift could be interpreted as a consequence of a short-range spin-dependent interaction that could possibly be mediated by axions or axion-like particles, or as an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment of the neutron. Another search, based on so-called UCN disappearance measurements, targeted previously reported signals of neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations. These dark matter searches confirmed and improved previous results, as detailed in this review.

• The search for the neutron electric dipole moment at PSI

  The existence of a nonzero permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron would reveal a new source of CP violation and shed light on the origin of the matter--antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. The sensitivity of current experiments using stored ultracold neutrons (UCN) probes new physics beyond the TeV scale. Using the UCN source at the Paul Scherrer Institut, the nEDM collaboration has performed the most sensitive measurement of the neutron EDM to date, still compatible with zero ($|d_n|<1.8\times 10^{-26} \, e {\rm cm}$, C.L.90%). A new experiment designed to improve the sensitivity by an order of magnitude, n2EDM, is currently in construction.

• Recent results of laser spectroscopy experiments of pionic helium atoms at PSI

  A review of a recent experiment carried out at PSI involving laser spectroscopy of metastable pionic helium ($\pi{\rm ^4He}^+\equiv\pi^{-}+{\rm ^4He}^{2+}+e^-$) atoms is presented. An infrared transition $(n,\ell)=(17,16)$$\rightarrow$$(17,15)$ at a resonance frequency of $\nu\approx 183760$ GHz was detected.

• Pion electronic decay and lepton universality

  In common with a number of simple processes involving elementary particles, charged pion decays are profoundly shaped by applicable Standard Model (SM) symmetries and properties. Given the highly precise SM theoretical description, pion decays are used as selective probes of SM parameters, and of possible SM extensions. The PEN experiment at PSI is studying the π + → e + ν e (γ), or π_ e2(γ) decay. The primary goal is to reach the relative precision of 5 × 10 ^{−4} in Re/μ^π, the branching ratio for π_ e2(γ) decay. We review the PEN research program, its present status, and prospects.

• The pion beta and radiative electronic decays

  As the lightest meson, pion offers unique opportunities for measuring parameters and testing limits of the Standard Model (SM). The PiBeta experiment, carried out at PSI, focused on SM tests accessible through the pion beta, π + → π 0 e + ν e (γ), and electronic radiative, π + → e + ν e γ, decay channels. We review the PiBeta experiment, and update the pion beta decay branching ratio B πβ^exp = 1.038(6) tot × 10 −8 , along with the corresponding derived value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V ud = 0.9738(28).
