Wegner's Ising gauge spins versus Kitaev's Majorana partons: Mapping and application to anisotropic confinement in spin-orbital liquids

Emergent gauge theories take a prominent role in the description of quantum matter, supporting deconfined phases with topological order and fractionalized excitations. A common construction of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories, first introduced by Wegner, involves Ising gauge spins placed on links and subject to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Gauss law constraint. As shown by Kitaev, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories also emerge in the exact solution of certain spin systems with bond-dependent interactions. In this context, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field is constructed from Majorana fermions, with gauge constraints given by the parity of Majorana fermions on each site. In this work, we provide an explicit Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps between these two formulations on the square lattice, where the Kitaev-type gauge theory emerges as the exact solution of a spin-orbital (Kugel-Khomskii) Hamiltonian. We then apply our mapping to study local perturbations to the spin-orbital Hamiltonian, which correspond to anisotropic interactions between electric-field variables in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory. These are shown to induce anisotropic confinement that is characterized by emergence of weakly-coupled one-dimensional spin chains. We study the nature of these phases and corresponding confinement transitions in both absence and presence of itinerant fermionic matter degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss how our mapping can be applied to the Kitaev spin-1/2 model on the honeycomb lattice.

Quasiparticle disintegration in fermionic superfluids

We study the fermionic quasiparticle spectrum in a zero-temperature superfluid Fermi gas, and in particular how it is modified by different disintegration processes. On top of the disintegration by emission of a collective boson ($1\to2$, subject of a previous study, PRL 124, 073404), we consider here disintegration events where three quasiparticles are emitted ($1\to3$). We show that both disintegration processes are described by a $t$-matrix self-energy (as well as some highly off-resonant vacuum processes), and we characterize the associated disintegration continua. At strong coupling, we show that the quasiparticle spectrum is heavily distorted near the $1\to3$ disintegration threshold. Near the dispersion minimum, where the quasiparticles remain well-defined, the main effect of the off-shell disintegration processes is to shift the location of the minimum by a value that corresponds to the Hartree shift in the BCS limit. With our approximation of the self-energy, the correction to the energy gap with respect to the mean-field result however remains small, in contrast with experimental measurements.
Global Analysis of SSAs and the Impact of the EIC and SoLID on Tensor Charge Extractions

Single transverse-spin asymmetries (SSAs) give great insight into the 3-dimensional structure of hadrons. We report on the first global QCD analysis of SSAs in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, electron-positron annihilation, Drell-Yan, and single-inclusive proton-proton collisions. One byproduct of the analysis is an extraction of the transversity function, from which the nucleon tensor charges can be computed, and we find, for the first time, agreement with lattice QCD for these quantities. Based on this analysis, we perform an impact study of future data on extractions of the nucleon tensor charges.
Search for light WIMP recoils on methane with NEWS-G

The NEWS-G collaboration is searching for light dark matter using single-electron-threshold Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) filled with light gaseous targets (H, He, Ne). NEWS-G has built a new 140 cm diameter SPC equipped with a multi-anode ACHINOS sensor. Robust calibrations with a UV laser and an $\mathrm{^{37}}$Ar source were performed to characterize the detector response to low energy events and achieve statistical background rejection. This work presents preliminary results from physics data taken with methane, leading to world-leading spin-dependent sensitivity under 2 $\mathrm{GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP masses.
The Belle II experiment: Status and prospects

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy asymmetric $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider is a substantial upgrade of the B factory facility at the Japanese KEK laboratory. The design luminosity of the machine is $6\times10^{35}$ $cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ and the Belle II experiment aims to record 50 $ab^{-1}$ of data, a factor of 50 more than its predecessor. With this data set, Belle II will be able to measure the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, the matrix elements and their phases, with unprecedented precision and explore flavor physics with $B$, charmed mesons, and $\tau$ leptons. Belle II has also a unique capability to search for low-mass dark matter and low-mass mediators. In this paper, we will review the status of the Belle II detector, SuperKEKB accelerator and the prospects for physics at Belle II.
Emergent symmetries in atomic nuclei: Probing nuclear dynamics and physics beyond the standard model

Dominant shapes naturally emerge in atomic nuclei from first principles, thereby establishing the shape-preserving symplectic Sp(3, $\mathbb{R}$) symmetry as remarkably ubiquitous and almost perfect symmetry in nuclei. We discuss the critical role of this emergent symmetry in enabling machine-learning descriptions of heavy nuclei, ab initio modeling of $\alpha$ clustering and collectivity, as well as tests of beyond-the-standard-model physics. In addition, the Sp(3, $\mathbb{R}$) and SU(3) symmetries provide relevant degrees of freedom that underpin the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model with the remarkable capability of reaching nuclei and reaction fragments beyond the lightest and close-to-spherical species.
Probing hadronic interaction models with the hybrid data of the Pierre Auger Observatory

Presently large systematic uncertainties remain in the description of hadronic interactions at ultra-high energies and a fully consistent description of air-shower experimental data is yet to be reached. The amount of data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory using simultaneously the fluorescence and surface detectors in the energy range 10$^{18.5}$ -10$^{19.0}$ eV has provided opportunity to perform a multi-parameter test of model predictions. We apply a global method to simultaneously fit the mass composition of cosmic rays and adjustments to the simulated depth of shower maximum, and hadronic signal at ground level. The best description of the hybrid data is obtained for a deeper scale of simulated depth of shower maximum than predicted by hadronic interaction models tuned to the LHC data. Consequently, the deficit of the simulated hadronic signal at ground level, dominated by muons, is alleviated with respect to the unmodified hadronic interaction models. Because of the size of the adjustments to simulated depth of shower maximum and hadronic signal and the large number of events in the sample, the statistical significance of these assumed adjustments is large, greater than 5$\sigma_{stat}$, even for the combination of the systematic experimental shifts within 1$\sigma_{sys}$ that are the most favorable for the models.
A novel formulation of the unintegrated gluon distribution for DIS

In this talk, we revisit inclusive DIS in the small $x$ limit and derive a new factorization formula that accounts for leading powers in both Bjorken and Regge limits. In this semi-classical description, we obtain a new unintegrated gluon distribution which encompasses both the dipole operator and the gluon Parton Distribution Function with an explicit dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction $x$.
