Arrested development and fragmentation in strongly-interacting Floquet systems

We explore how interactions can facilitate classical like dynamics in models with sequentially activated hopping. Specifically, we add local and short range interaction terms to the Hamiltonian and ask for conditions ensuring the evolution acts as a permutation on initial local number Fock states. We show that at certain values of hopping and interactions, determined by a set of Diophantine equations, such evolution can be realized. When only a subset of the Diophantine equations is satisfied the Hilbert space can be fragmented into frozen states, states obeying cellular automata like evolution, and subspaces where evolution mixes Fock states and is associated with eigenstates exhibiting high entanglement entropy and level repulsion.

Field-induced local Fermi-liquid states in the underscreened Kondo model for Eu compounds

We have studied an underscreened Kondo model for the impurity spin $S=7/2$ capturing the $4f$ characteristics of a nearly divalent Eu ion. By using the numerical renormalization group method, it is shown that an unusual heavy-fermion state is induced from the underscreened spin state when a weak crystal field is introduced. It is also found that the application of the magnetic field enhances the effective mass of the heavy fermions, reflecting the field-induced level crossing of the spin states. We will discuss the mechanism of these mass enhancements in terms of a realization of the two-stage Kondo effect.
Josephson effects between the Kitaev ladder superconductors

The two-leg ladder system consisting of the Kitaev chains is known to exhibit a richer phase diagram than that of the single chain. We theoretically investigate the variety of the Josephson effects between the ladder systems. We consider the Josephson phase difference $\theta$ between these two ladder systems as well as the phase difference $\phi$ between the parallel chains in each ladder system. The total energy of the junction at $T = 0$ is calculated by a numerical diagonalization method as functions of $\theta$, $\phi$, and also a transverse hopping $t_{\perp}$ in the ladders. We find that, by controlling $t_{\perp}$ and $\phi$, the junction exhibits not only the fractional Josephson effect for the phase difference $\theta$, but also the usual 0-junction and even $\pi$-junction properties.
Hidden-orders of uranium compounds

Hidden order is often discussed in strongly correlated electron systems. In many cases, it shows no magnetic responses, so that the order parameter is electric, but accompanies few lattice distortion. In the Jahn-Teller cases, the ordered state gains its energy by changing inter-site mixing strengths, leading a larger structural distortion with lowering symmetry. On the contrary, in strongly correlated electron systems, the strong intra-site Coulomb energy causes the the symmetry lowering. It is not necessary to bring the lattice distortion for lowering local site symmetry. In fact, lower symmetry of electronic state than the symmetry of the crystal structure can be found for UTe$_2$, UGe$_2$ similarly for URu$_2$Si$_2$.

A testable theory for high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates

A number of theories for the superconductivity in cuprates, have been proposed in the more than 30 years that have elapsed since its discovery. A common feature of these theories is the small number, or even the absence, of quantitative predictions that could be compared to a vast number of experimental data, which are, conversely, available. Such theories are, consequently non-testable. We describe the foundations and a number of applications of a theory describing High-Tc Superconductivity in cuprates, which we proposed recently, that besides being testable, has proven to meet successfully the tests to which it has been submitted so far.

The magnetization process of the $S=1/2$ delta chain with the anisotropic ferromagnetic interaction is investigated using the numerical diagonalization of finite-size clusters. It is found that the spin nematic liquid phase appears in higher magnetization region, as well as the SDW liquid one in lower region.
Knots and entanglement

We extend the entanglement bootstrap program to (3+1)-dimensions. We study knotted excitations of (3+1)-dimensional liquid topological orders and exotic fusion processes of loops. As in previous work in (2+1)-dimensions [Ann. Phys. 418, 168164 (2020), Phys. Rev. B 103, 115150 (2021)], we define a variety of superselection sectors and fusion spaces from two axioms on the ground state entanglement entropy. In particular, we identify fusion spaces associated with knots. We generalize the information convex set to a new class of regions called immersed regions, promoting various theorems to this new context. Examples from solvable models are provided; for instance, a concrete calculation of knot multiplicity shows that the knot complement of a trefoil knot can store quantum information. We define spiral maps that allow us to understand consistency relations for torus knots as well as spiral fusions of fluxes.

Fragmentation-induced localization and boundary charges in dimensions two and above

We study higher dimensional models with symmetric correlated hoppings, which generalize a one-dimensional model introduced in the context of dipole-conserving dynamics. We prove rigorously that whenever the local configuration space takes its smallest non-trivial value, these models exhibit localized behavior due to fragmentation, in any dimension. For the same class of models, we then construct a hierarchy of conserved quantities that are power-law localized at the boundary of the system with increasing powers. Combining these with Mazur's bound, we prove that boundary correlations are infinitely long lived, even when the bulk is not localized. We use our results to construct quantum Hamiltonians that exhibit the analogues of strong zero modes in two and higher dimensions.

Volume-to-area law entanglement transition in a non-Hermitian free fermionic chain

We consider the dynamics of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model arising as the no-click limit of a continuously monitored free fermion chain where particles and holes are measured on two sublattices. The model has $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry, which we show to spontaneously break as a function of the strength of measurement backaction, resulting in a spectral transition where quasiparticles acquire a finite lifetime in patches of the Brillouin zone. We compute the entanglement entropy's dynamics in the thermodynamic limit and demonstrate an entanglement transition between volume-law and area-law scaling, which we characterize analytically. Interestingly we show that the entanglement transition and the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking do not coincide, the former occurring when the entire decay spectrum of the quasiparticle becomes gapped.

Hydrodynamics with triangular point group

When continuous rotational invariance of a two-dimensional fluid is broken to the discrete, dihedral subgroup $D_6$ - the point group of an equilateral triangle - the resulting anisotropic hydrodynamics breaks both spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, while preserving their combination. In this work, we present the hydrodynamics of such $D_6$-symmetric fluids, identifying new symmetry-allowed dissipative terms in the hydrodynamic equations of motion. We propose two experiments - both involving high-purity solid-state materials with $D_6$-invariant Fermi surfaces - that are sensitive to these new coefficients in a $D_6$-invariant electron fluid. In particular, we propose a local current imaging experiment (which is present-day realizable with nitrogen vacancy center magnetometry) in a hexagonal device, whose $D_6$-exploiting boundary conditions enable the unambiguous detection of these novel transport coefficients.
