Top quark pair and single top cross sections and ttX (CMS)

Latest results on inclusive and differential top quark pair and single top quark production cross sections are presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of various kinematic observables of the top quarks and the jets and leptons of the event final state. The results are confronted with precise theory calculations and used to constrain Standard Model parameters. Measurements are performed also with high pT top quarks, i.e., in boosted regimes.
The prediction of anyons: Its history and wider implications

Prediction of "anyons," often attributed exclusively to Wilczek, came first from Leinaas and Myrheim in 1977, and independently from Goldin, Menikoff, and Sharp in 1980-81. In 2020, experimentalists successfully created anyonic excitations. This paper discusses why the possibility of quantum particles in two-dimensional space with intermediate exchange statistics eluded physicists for so long after bosons and fermions were understood. The history suggests ideas for the preparation of future researchers. I conclude by addressing failures to attribute scientific achievements accurately, both inadvertent and intentional. Such practices disproportionately hurt women and minorities in physics.
Forward proton measurements with ATLAS

The ALFA subdetector is designed to measure elastic proton-proton scattering from which the total cross section and $\rho$-parameter are determined. In 2016, special runs at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and with $\beta^\star$ = 2.5 km were recorded.
The strong coupling from $e^+e^-\to$~hadrons

We use a new compilation of the hadronic $R$-ratio from available data for the process $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons below the charm mass to determine the strong coupling $\alpha_s$, using finite-energy sum rules. Quoting our results at the $\tau$ mass to facilitate comparison to the results obtained from similar analyses of hadronic $\tau$-decay data, we find $\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)=0.298\pm 0.016\pm 0.006$ in fixed-order perturbation theory, and $\alpha_s(m_\tau^2)=0.304\pm 0.018\pm 0.006$ in contour-improved perturbation theory, where the first error is statistical, and the second error combines various systematic effects. These values are in good agreement with a recent determination from the OPAL and ALEPH data for hadronic $\tau$ decays. We briefly compare the $R(s)$-based analysis with the $\tau$-based analysis.
Measurements of W and Z boson production in ATLAS

Precision measurements of the production cross-sections of W and Z boson at LHC provide important tests of perturbative QCD and information about the parton distribution functions for quarks within the proton. We present measurements of cross sections for inclusive $W^+$, $W^{-}$ and Z boson production using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=2.76 TeV. Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Z boson at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV is also presented. The measurements are corrected for detector effects and compared with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations.

MEG final results and progress towards MEG II

The MEG experiment, which is to search for lepton flavor violating muon decay, had been successfully finished in 2013. The final sensitivity of the experiment was 5.3 × 10−13, and since the experiment did not find any signal, the upper limit of the branching ratio of the μ+ → e+γ was set to be 4.2 × 10−13 at 90% CL. The MEG II experiment will improve the sensitivity by an order of magnitude with three years data taking, and the target sensitivity is 6×10−14. In 2018 after the detector integration, the muon beam data taking will be planned with limited number of readout channels. In 2019, the engineering run and the physics run will be started.
Tau reconstruction at CMS with a focus on high $ p_{T} $ taus

We present the algorithm and performance of tau reconstruction at the CMS experiment, while highlighting a dedicated reconstruction algorithm that uses calorimeter hits instead of tracks to reconstruct taus with high transverse momentum. Describing the standard Hadrons-Plus-Strips (HPS) algorithm and its dependence on track reconstruction and shower modelling, we present the calorimetric tau (calo-tau) reconstruction that uses minimal track information for high $ p_{T} $ taus. The pros and cons of these algorithms are discussed along with their performance and potential uses. It is found that the calo-tau algorithm outperforms the HPS algorithm in the high efficiency region. This study is work in progress, and is an attempt to tune the reconstruction for high $ p_{T} $ taus. The calo-tau algorithm is not yet an official tau reconstruction algorithm for CMS.
Irreducible representations of $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded supersymmetry algebra and their applications

We give a brief review on recent developments of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded symmetry in physics in which hidden $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded symmetries and $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded extensions of known systems are discussed. This elucidates physical relevance of the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded algebras. As an example of physically interesting algebra, we take $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded supersymmetry (SUSY) algebras and consider their irreducible representations (irreps). A list of irreps for ${\cal N} = 1, 2$ algebras is presented and as an application of the irreps, $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded SUSY classical actions are constructed.
Measurement of the transverse polarization of electrons emitted in neutron decay – nTRV experiment

This paper recalls the main achievements of the nTRV experiment which measured two components of the transverse polarization ($\sigma_{T_{1}}$, $\sigma_{T_{2}}$) of electrons emitted in the $\beta$-decay of polarized, free neutrons and deduced two correlation coefficients, $R$ and $N$, that are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. The value of time-reversal odd coefficient $R$, 0.004$\pm$0.012$\pm$0.005, significantly improved limits on the relative strength of imaginary scalar coupling constant in the weak interaction. The value obtained for the time-reversal even correlation coefficient $N$, 0.067$\pm$0.011$\pm$0.004, agrees with the Standard Model expectation, providing an important sensitivity test of the electron polarimeter. One of the conclusions of this pioneering experiment was that the transverse electron polarization in the neutron $\beta$-decay is worth more systematic exploring by measurements of yet experimentally not attempted correlation coefficients such as $H$, $L$, $S$, $U$ and $V$. This article presents a brief outlook on that questions.
