• Constant-time quantum algorithm for homology detection in closed curves

  Given a loop or more generally 1-cycle $r$ of size L on a closed two-dimensional manifold or surface, represented by a triangulated mesh, a question in computational topology asks whether or not it is homologous to zero. We frame and tackle this problem in the quantum setting. Given an oracle that one can use to query the inclusion of edges on a closed curve, we design a quantum algorithm for such a homology detection with a constant running time, with respect to the size or the number of edges on the loop $r$, requiring only a single usage of oracle. In contrast, classical algorithm requires $\Omega(L)$ oracle usage, followed by a linear time processing and can be improved to logarithmic by using a parallel algorithm. Our quantum algorithm can be extended to check whether two closed loops belong to the same homology class. Furthermore, it can be applied to a specific problem in the homotopy detection, namely, checking whether two curves are not homotopically equivalent on a closed two-dimensional manifold.

• B boson search at KLOE/KLOE-2

  Following the many contributions KLOE-2 has done to Dark Matter (DM) searches, an alternative model, where the Dark Force mediator is an hypothetical leptophobic B boson, in contra-position to the U boson or "dark photon", is investigated. The B boson couples mainly to quarks and it can be searched in the Phi decay to $\eta$-B where B will decay in $\pi^{0}$-$\gamma$. So far, investigation of the $\pi^{0}$-$\gamma$ invariant mass shows no clear structure belonging to the signal of the DM mediator, hence, an upper limit in the number of events at 90% with CLs the technique will be established for the decay.

• Automatic transformation of irreducible representations for efficient contraction of tensors with cyclic group symmetry

  Tensor contractions are ubiquitous in computational chemistry and physics, where tensors generally represent states or operators and contractions express the algebra of these quantities. In this context, the states and operators often preserve physical conservation laws, which are manifested as group symmetries in the tensors. These group symmetries imply that each tensor has block sparsity and can be stored in a reduced form. For nontrivial contractions, the memory footprint and cost are lowered, respectively, by a linear and a quadratic factor in the number of symmetry sectors. State-of-the-art tensor contraction software libraries exploit this opportunity by iterating over blocks or using general block-sparse tensor representations. Both approaches entail overhead in performance and code complexity. With intuition aided by tensor diagrams, we present a technique, irreducible representation alignment, which enables efficient handling of Abelian group symmetries via only dense tensors, by using contraction-specific reduced forms. This technique yields a general algorithm for arbitrary group symmetric contractions, which we implement in Python and apply to a variety of representative contractions from quantum chemistry and tensor network methods. As a consequence of relying on only dense tensor contractions, we can easily make use of efficient batched matrix multiplication via Intel's MKL and distributed tensor contraction via the Cyclops library, achieving good efficiency and parallel scalability on up to 4096 Knights Landing cores of a supercomputer.

• Inferring flavor mixtures in multijet events

  Multijet events with heavy-flavors are of central importance at the LHC since many relevant processes–such as $t\bar t$, $hh$, $t\bar t h$ and others–have a preferred branching ratio for this final state. Current techniques for tackling these processes use hard-assignment selections through $b$-tagging working points, and suffer from systematic uncertainties because of the difficulties in Monte Carlo simulations. We develop a flexible Bayesian mixture model approach to simultaneously infer $b$-tagging score distributions and the flavor mixture composition in the dataset. We model multidimensional jet events, and to enhance estimation efficiency, we design structured priors that leverages the continuity and unimodality of the $b$-tagging score distributions. Remarkably, our method eliminates the need for a parametric assumption and is robust against model misspecification–It works for arbitrarily flexible continuous curves and is better if they are unimodal. We have run a toy inferential process with signal $bbbb$ and backgrounds $ccbb$ and $cccc$, and we find that with a few hundred events we can recover the true mixture fractions of the signal and backgrounds, as well as the true $b$-tagging score distribution curves, despite their arbitrariness and nonparametric shapes. We discuss prospects for taking these findings into a realistic scenario in a physics analysis. The presented results could be a starting point for a different and novel kind of analysis in multijet events, with a scope competitive with current state-of-the-art analyses. We also discuss the possibility of using these results in general cases of signals and backgrounds with approximately known continuous distributions and/or expected unimodality.

  Lepton flavour violation (LFV) is a striking signature of potential beyond the Standard Model physics. The search for LFV with the ATLAS detector is reported in searches focusing on the decay of the Higgs boson, the Z boson and of a heavy neutral gauge boson, Z', using pp collisions data with a center of mass energy of 8 TeV and 13 TeV.

• Lacing topological orders in two dimensions: Exactly solvable models for Kitaev's sixteen-fold way

  A family of two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 models have been constructed to realize Kitaev's sixteen-fold way of anyon theories. Defining a one-dimensional (1D) path through all the lattice sites, and performing the Jordan-Wigner transformation with the help of the 1D path, we find that such a spin-1/2 model is equivalent to a model with $\nu$ species of Majorana fermions coupled to a static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. Here each species of Majorana fermions gives rise to an energy band that carries a Chern number $\mathcal{C}=1$, yielding a total Chern number $\mathcal{C}=\nu$. It has been shown that the ground states are three (four)-fold topologically degenerate on a torus, when $\nu$ is an odd (even) number. These exactly solvable models can be achieved by quantum simulations.

• Beyond PT-symmetry: Towards a symmetry-metric relation for time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

  In this work we first propose a method for the derivation of a general continuous antilinear time-dependent (TD) symmetry operator I(t) for a TD non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H(t). Assuming H(t) to be simultaneously ρ(t)-pseudo-Hermitian and Ξ(t)-anti-pseudo-Hermitian, we also derive the antilinear symmetry I(t)=Ξ⁻¹(t)ρ(t), which retrieves an important result obtained by Mostafazadeh [J. Math, Phys. 43, 3944 (2002)] for the time-independent (TI) scenario. We apply our method for the derivaton of the symmetry associated with TD non-Hermitian linear and quadratic Hamiltonians. The computed TD symmetry operators for both cases are then particularized for their equivalent TI lHamiltonians and PT-symmetric restrictions. In the TI scenario we retrieve the well-known Bender-Berry-Mandilara result for the symmetry operator: I^{2k}=1 with k odd [J. Phys. A 35, L467 (2002)]. The results here derived allow us to propose a useful symmetry-metric relation for TD non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. From this relation the TD metric is automatically derived from the TD symmetry of the problem. Then, when placed in perspective with the antilinear symmetry I(t)=Ξ⁻¹(t)ρ(t), the symmetry-metric relation finally allow us to derive the Ξ(t)-anti-pseudo-Hermitian operator. Our results reinforce the prospects of going beyond PT-symmetric quantum mechanics making the field of pseudo-Hermiticity even more comprehensive and promising.

• Quenched random mass disorder in the large N theory of vector bosons

  We study the critical bosonic O(N) vector model with quenched random mass disorder in the large N limit. Due to the replicated action which is sometimes not bounded from below, we avoid the replica trick and adopt a traditional approach to directly compute the disorder averaged physical observables. At $N=\infty$, we can exactly solve the disordered model. The resulting low energy behavior can be described by two scale invariant theories, one of which has an intrinsic scale. At finite $N$, we find that the previously proposed attractive disordered fixed point at $d=2$ continues to exist at $d=2+\epsilon$ spatial dimensions. We also studied the system in the $3<d<4$ spatial dimensions where the disorder is relevant at the Gaussian fixed point. However, no physical attractive fixed point is found right below four spatial dimensions. Nevertheless, the stable fixed point at $2+\epsilon$ dimensions can still survive at $d=3$ where the system has experimental realizations. Some critical exponents are predicted in order to be checked by future numerics and experiments.

  These lecture notes provide a brief introduction to extensions of gravity and their connections to dark energy. Due to time and space limitations this is not a comprehensive review of the field. Instead, I aim to introduce key concepts and ideas in this area through a series of examples based on scalar field extensions of gravity and models of dark energy.
