• Non-invertible symmetries and higher representation theory II

  In this paper we continue our investigation of the global categorical symmetries that arise when gauging finite higher groups and their higher subgroups with discrete torsion. The motivation is to provide a common perspective on the construction of non-invertible global symmetries in higher dimensions and a precise description of the associated symmetry categories. We propose that the symmetry categories obtained by gauging higher subgroups may be defined as higher group-theoretical fusion categories, which are built from the projective higher representations of higher groups. As concrete applications we provide a unified description of the symmetry categories of gauge theories in three and four dimensions based on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(N)$, and a fully categorical description of non-invertible symmetries obtained by gauging a 1-form symmetry with a mixed 't Hooft anomaly. We also discuss the effect of discrete torsion on symmetry categories, based a series of obstructions determined by spectral sequence arguments.

• x-y duality in topological recursion for exponential variables via quantum dilogarithm

  For a given spectral curve, the theory of topological recursion generates two different families $\omega_{g,n}$ and $\omega_{g,n}^\vee$ of multi-differentials, which are for algebraic spectral curves related via the universal $x-y$ duality formula. We propose a formalism to extend the validity of the $x-y$ duality formula of topological recursion from algebraic curves to spectral curves with exponential variables of the form $e^x=F(e^y)$ or $e^x=F(y)e^{a y}$ with $F$ rational and $a$ some complex number, which was in principle already observed in [Commun. Number Theory Phys. 13, 763 (2019); J. Lond. Math. Soc. 109, e12946 (2024)]. From topological recursion perspective the family $\omega_{g,n}^\vee$ would be trivial for these curves. However, we propose changing the $n=1$ sector of $\omega_{g,n}^\vee$ via a version of the Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm which will lead to the correct two families $\omega_{g,n}$ and $\omega_{g,n}^\vee$ related by the same $x-y$ duality formula as for algebraic curves. As a consequence, the $x-y$ symplectic transformation formula extends further to important examples governed by topological recursion including, for instance, Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{C}^3$ (or, equivalently, triple Hodge integrals), orbifold Hurwitz numbers, and stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$. The proposed formalism is related to the issue topological recursion encounters for specific choices of framings for the topological vertex curve.

• On the Virasoro fusion kernel at $c=25$

  We find a formula for the Virasoro fusion kernel at $c=25$, in terms of the connection coefficients of the Painlevé VI differential equation. Our formula agrees numerically with previously known integral representations of the kernel. The derivation of our formula relies on a duality $c\to 26-c$ that is obeyed by the shift equations for the fusion and modular kernels. We conjecture that for $c<1$ the fusion and modular kernels are not smooth functions, but distributions.

• Boundary vertex algebras for 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs

  We initiate the study of boundary Vertex Operator Algebras (VOAs) of topologically twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs. This is a recently introduced class of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs that by definition have zero-dimensional Higgs and Coulomb branches. We briefly explain why it is reasonable to obtain rational VOAs at the boundary of their topological twists. When a rank-0 SCFT is realized as the IR fixed point of a $\mathcal{N}=2$ Lagrangian theory, we propose a technique for the explicit construction of its topological twists and boundary VOAs based on deformations of the holomorphic-topological twist of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ microscopic description. We apply this technique to the $B$ twist of a newly discovered family of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs ${\mathcal T}_r$ and argue that they admit the simple affine VOAs $L_r(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ at their boundary. In the simplest case, this leads to a novel level-rank duality between $L_1(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ and the minimal model $M(2,5)$. As an aside, we present a TQFT obtained by twisting a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ QFT that admits the $M(3,4)$ minimal model as a boundary VOA and briefly comment on the classical freeness of VOAs at the boundary of 3d TQFTs.

• Large deviations in the symmetric simple exclusion process with slow boundaries: A hydrodynamic perspective

  We revisit the one-dimensional model of the symmetric simple exclusion process slowly coupled with two unequal reservoirs at the boundaries. In its non-equilibrium stationary state, the large deviations functions of density and current have been recently derived using exact microscopic analysis by Derrida, Hirschberg and Sadhu in [J. Stat. Phys. 182, 15 (2021)]. We present an independent derivation using the hydrodynamic approach of the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT). The slow coupling introduces additional boundary terms in the MFT-Action, which modifies the spatial boundary conditions for the associated variational problem. For the density large deviations, we explicitly solve the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations using a simple local transformation of the optimal fields. For the current large deviations, our solution is obtained using the additivity principle. In addition to recovering the expression of the large deviations functions, our solution describes the most probable path for these rare fluctuations.

• Critical loop models are exactly solvable

  In two-dimensional critical loop models, including the O(n) and Potts models, the spectrum is exactly known, as are a few structure constants or ratios thereof. Using numerical conformal bootstrap methods, we study 235 of the simplest 4-point structure constants. For each structure constant, we find an analytic expression as a product of two factors: 1) a universal function of conformal dimensions, built from Barnes' double Gamma function, and 2) a polynomial function of loop weights, whose degree obeys a simple upper bound. We conjecture that all structure constants are of this form. For a few 4-point functions, we build corresponding observables in a lattice loop model. From numerical lattice results, we extract amplitude ratios that depend neither on the lattice size nor on the lattice coupling. These ratios agree with the corresponding ratios of 4-point structure constants.

• All regular $4 \times 4$ solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

  We complete the classification of 4×4 regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Apart from previously known models, we find four new models of non-difference form. All the new models give rise to Hamiltonians and transfer matrices that have a non-trivial Jordan block structure. One model corresponds to a non-diagonalisable integrable deformation of the XXX spin chain.

• Loop equations for generalised eigenvalue models

  We derive the loop equation for the 1-matrix model with generic difference-type measure for eigenvalues and develop a recursive algebraic framework for solving it to an arbitrary order in the coupling constant in and beyond the planar approximation. The planar limit is solved exactly for a one-parametric family of models and in the general case at strong coupling. The Wilson loop in the $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ super-Yang-Mills theory and the Hoppe model are used to illustrate our methods.

  The purpose of this paper is to investigate the global categorical symmetries that arise when gauging finite higher groups in three or more dimensions. The motivation is to provide a common perspective on constructions of non-invertible global symmetries in higher dimensions and a precise description of the associated symmetry categories. This paper focusses on gauging finite groups and split 2-groups in three dimensions. In addition to topological Wilson lines, we show that this generates a rich spectrum of topological surface defects labelled by 2-representations and explain their connection to condensation defects for Wilson lines. We derive various properties of the topological defects and show that the associated symmetry category is the fusion 2-category of 2-representations. This allows us to determine the full symmetry categories of certain gauge theories with disconnected gauge groups. A subsequent paper will examine gauging more general higher groups in higher dimensions.

• Stress correlations in near-crystalline packings

  We derive exact results for stress correlations in near-crystalline systems in two and three dimensions. We study energy minimized configurations of particles interacting through Harmonic as well as Lennard-Jones potentials, for varying degrees of microscopic disorder and quenched forces on grains. Our findings demonstrate that the macroscopic elastic properties of such near-crystalline packings remain unchanged within a certain disorder threshold, yet they can be influenced by various factors, including packing density, pressure, and the strength of inter-particle interactions. We show that the stress correlations in such systems display anisotropic behavior at large lengthscales and are significantly influenced by the pre-stress of the system. The anisotropic nature of these correlations remains unaffected as we increase the strength of the disorder. Additionally, we derive the large lengthscale behavior for the change in the local stress components that shows a $1/r^d$ radial decay for the case of particle size disorder and a $1/r^{d-1}$ behavior for quenched forces introduced into a crystalline network. Finally, we verify our theoretical results numerically using energy-minimised static particle configurations.
